Your reporting and responses to this week’s News Enterprise and Sun
Filed Under 2010 Issues, Community News
(9/1, 2010) During the last election we put up a post every Wednesday to comment on local news & letters to the editor in the only local weekly that serves all of Los Alamitos, our own News Enterprise.
This year we’re adding the Sun to the mix, even though it’s distribution in Los Al is limited. (Click here for last week’s post & comments)
The goal is to encourage discussion of important issues, making it easier (and faster) for the people to speak about what concerns them. Rather than waiting a week to respond, conversations can take place at the speed of light.
This weekly post also allows you to report on articles of interest to others in the community who may not receive or have time to scrutinize either of the papers.
Unfortunately, this week’s N-E apparently didn’t have room for any letters to the editor, but it does have a few interesting article, and one faux article I’d like to warn you about. I know letters were sent in. . . because I sent in one of them!
According to Editor Brian Smith, the new weekly “Dining Out Guide” took up so much space that he even had to cut one of his own articles. Our older daughter was an intern at the News Enterprise pack in the days when Pat Cavanaugh ran the paper, and I know what deadline day can be like. Hopefully they may add another page (actually 4 pages) if needed to get it all in.
You’ll also want to “stay tuned” here for several upcoming posts scheduled to run before the 3 day weekend begins, including another “Curioius Minds Want to Know” and a report on the Agenda for this coming Tuesday’s Los Alamitos City Council meeting.
As for today’s N-E, I found Brian’s front page update on local school construction helpful. It was basically his report on the August 24 LAUSD Board Meeting. Brian is to be commended for the hours he puts in attending and reporting on both our School Board and City Council meetings.
They also have a two page “Dining Out Guide,” which appears to list most local restaurants in Los Al and the surrounding area by category.
Whether letters are published or not, we’ll be putting this post up weekly through the current election cycle. If a letter or article or opinion piece in the N-E or the Sun catches your attention or causes you concern, you can post your comment here and the world will have it available immediately.
The Sun
I probably won’t see the Sun this week–the newspaper, that is, but if you do, let us know anything noteworthy. I guess living in the Highlands or eating at Hoff’s Hut does have certain privileges.
Posting comments
It’s probably not a bad idea to summarize the item you’re commenting on, as many of our readers may not have seen the item you did. Only your name (and any website you note) is public. You can use a nickname, first name, or whole name as you choose. Maybe even a reference to the article or letter you’re commenting on, like “JM on Dave’s letter,” for example.
As always, please use family friendly language appropriate to our town, please try to be diplomatic and focus on issues, rather than personal smears. Diplomacy is always more persuasive and gets your message through

As promised, an update on why no letters ran in today’s News Enterprise:
Not enough room. In fact, the editor even had to cut one of his own articles, as I indicated when I also updated the text of this article Apparently 3 letters were held over for next week’s News Enterprise.
Just one more benefit of LetsFixLosAl.com–not only does your comment post instantly in most cases, but we never run out of room!
And we never “bump” or delay your comment for something else that’s “more important.”
Because, with the exception of a word from the Almighty or emergency report from the police, nothing’s more important than the voice of the people!
Ouch, stop picking on Brian. He just does what the Verdugo’s tell him to do, and paid copy is more important than anything else.
Thanks for the brewskis dude!
