(Los Alamitos, 2/21/2012) According to City Engineer Dave Hunt the lane closures on Katella should begin winding down this week (see “Katella update: The end is in sight!“). That’s the good news.
As long as you’re off the road between midnight and 5 a.m., the bad news isn’t all that bad: The southbound 405 will be closed from midnight to 5 AM tonight (actually Wednesday morning, 2/22) between the 605 and Valley View, and then Thursday 2/23 – Saturday early morning (midnight – 5 AM) from the 605 to Seal Beach/Los Al Blvd.

What’s happening in your world?
This is also a “your reporting” post for upcoming events and general community news, our weekly “Community Bulletin Board.”
Like last month, we moving this post forward near the start of each week, deleting comments about events that have passed.
What local events do you have to report? Or, what’s going on this month that Los Alamitos area residents might be interested in?
For starters, the annual Race on the Base is this Saturday!
There’s also a pretty good food truck line up for this Thursday.
What did I miss? Maybe it’s an activity of a group you’re involved with: school, club, church, business, the Base, the Chamber. Or a neighborhood block sale.
Just put up a brief description, with the 4 W’s: What, Where, When, and Who, plus any other info you’d like. We suggest using the title of the event as your “name,” then including your name in the announcement if you wish.
You’ll help our readers know what’s coming up, & help the group get the word out. Our comments become searchable on the web almost instantly, so it gives the event a greater online presence.
Here are the month’s remaining days City Hall’s closed:
Weekdays City Hall Closed:
- Alternating Fridays: February 24 & March 9
Now it’s your turn. Right now, or maybe next week. Or when you hear or see something going on. If you’ve got Community news, this is the place for it!

Burglary Report taken on Block of 12500 Silver Fox Road
Quick update, courtesy of City Engineer Dave Hunt:
The contractor finished the curb and gutter last week. He had to wait for his asphalt order. Should be here Thursday or Friday for paving.
Grinding of the “Keep Clear” on the eastbound side and Striping will take place at night to minimize traffic delays. This should only take one night, possibly Sunday, February 26, if everything falls into place.
A letter will go out to the Chestnut residents notifying them of possible noise caused by the nighttime work.
They are working on the interlocking pavers now.
Crews will close the northbound I-405 freeway between Seal Beach Boulevard and the I-605 freeway from 11 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 23 until 5 a.m., Friday, Feb. 24.
Crews will also close the southbound I-405 freeway (between the I-605 freeway and Seal Beach Boulevard) overnight on Friday, Feb. 24 and Saturday, Feb. 25. This portion of the southbound I-405 freway will be closed from 11 p.m., Friday, Feb. 24 until 5 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 25 and from 11 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 25 until 5 a.m., Sunday, Feb. 26.
These nighttime closures are necessary in order to allow crews to remove the forms used during the recent stem and soffit concrete pour on the 7th Street bridge. Please note the northbound and southbound I-405 will never be closed simultaneously.
Thursday, 2/23/2012, 11:30 am. Dave EmersonEmerson here.
According to Edison, power went out to 2,000 users at 11 this morning. It could not be reset remotely, so we’re probably looking at hours, not minutes before it comes back on.
For automated updates call 800 611 1911.
The outage area includes atmost least three streets in Suburbia Estates. That makes at least 3 outages in the past year, 2 in the last month!
What about your neighborhood?
power was out in the Highlands for about 15 mins, but is back on now. That is twice in the last month.
What is up with that Edison?
Emerson here. Power went back on in Suburbia after almost an hour and a half off at 12:20. On the South side of Katella it was just off momentarily. A friend who works on Katella but lives in an older section of Long Beach told me he has outages there about once every four years, but seems to have them every month or so in Los Alamitos.
On the north west corner of Los Al and Katella (Preveza Center) it was out from 11:00 to 12:20. Our sources there heard it was a transformer blowing behind the old Shakey’s. 5 weeks ago it was an animal causing a transformer on Farquhar to blow.
Anybody still powerless?
Time to e-mail the City Council to put pressure on Edison to update our ancient power infrastructure?
You and that J M fella sure do a lot of complaining.
Mrs. Katella:
The power went out to 2,000 homes and businesses today in the Los Alamitos area due to equipment failure. There was no wind. No balloon in the power lines. It was the second such incident in about a month, and the third in several months. The only difference was this time power was restored in under six hours.
I am not counting several other outages during the last year in the eastern part of Appartment Row and in Carrier Row. Nor additional outages in Rossmoor Highlands.
When I simply checked to see if my neighbor’s power was out, she volunteered she had more power outages here in a year than she’d had in a dozen years in Long Beach.
When I met a local businessman for lunch, he mentioned, unprompted, that he has about ten time more power outages at his office in Los Alamitos than at his home in an older neighborhood of Long Beach.
I suggested it might be time to pressure Edison to invest in our aging infrastructure, and that this is something our City Leaders should perhaps look into.
Did I get something wrong?
Do you disagree?
Am I overlooking something.
Before you can fix something, you need to identify what’s broken. . . or what’s breaking down.
It appears to me our electrical infrastructure is breaking down.
Agree or disagree?
It’s “binary,” actually.
there seems to be a lot to complain about.
Friday afternoon, 2/24/2012, from our City Engineer:
Not exactly clear what, if any, additional work will be needed after the re-striping, but we’ll advise you as we find out.
Rossmoor Homeowner’s Paper Drive
On Saturday, February 25th from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., the RHA will be collecting newspapers at Rush Park on Blume. Proceeds go for community projects.
Sunday night update: Work should be done by Monday morning, but the City will review to see if any corrections are needed, so there may be some closures on Katella over the course of the coming week, but most likely not during rush hour.
