(8/31/2010, Los Alamitos) Just a reminder to those of us who no longer have school age kids that all it’s back to school time throughout the Los Alamitos Unified School District tomorrow, Wednesday, September 1!
That means little ones and not too careful bigger ones walking all over town. Getting their “school legs” back.
Time to slow down, to put down the cell phone, and be extra alert for young pedestrians, bicyclists, and scooter riders.
It’s also time to get stated a few minutes earlier when heading to work, since traffic will be more congested, especiallyfor those of us who travel north on Los Al Bvld. between 7 and 8:30 a.m.
It was interesting to note that Saturday’s slick flyer from Chuck Sylvia and the LATA made no mention of the current Council majority’s accomplishments when it comes to traffic improvements.
That’s because about the only thing the majority did about traffic in the last two years was to fire unanimously elected Traffic Commission President Brad Sheridan when he dared to disagree with them. . . on a non-traffic related matter. . . as a private citizen.
I called this lack of focus to the Council during public comments at the start of the year, when I noticed that there was nothing related to traffic among their list of priorities for 2010 for the City Manager. As I recall, my remarks were ignored by the majority. . . as most citizen comments have been for the last two years.
All the more reason to be extra alert for our little munchkins for the next 9 months. It ain’t easy navigating our streets, especially as a young pedestrian or cyclist.

Thank you for this post Dave, I really hope folks get started a little early and use caution. I have been taking my daughter to school for a month (Weaver is year-round) and it has been so peaceful. The first few weeks of school folks seem to forget how to park in designated spots, how to merge, how to cross a street. Please remember everyone has somewhere to be and we all want to get there safely.
You’re welcome, Michele.
It’s always helpful to know what posts people appreciate, and it does influence the content of the blog.
There’s a lot more to our town than just politics, and I like to try to focus on some of the things that bring us together, including our kids!
