[Ed note: Dave is out of town and I have been asked to cover for him while he is gone. This is STILL Dave's space, but I know that he would have put something up on this event, so I will do so in his place. - JM Ivler]

For 29 years the City of Los Alamitos has, along with the Joint Forces Training Base and The Cancer Support Foundation have been having the Race On The Base. All proceeds will benefit the USA Water Polo National Training Center at the Joint Forces Training Base. The 5K Walk is co-hosted by the Cancer Support Foundation and a portion of the proceeds, generated from the 5K Walk and through race registration, is donated to the organization.

So many of us have been touched by cancer and it’s effects. We have had friends and loved ones who have been diagnosed with cancer. We have lost someone, or know someone who has lost a loved one to a disease that you can fight, but not cure.

Cancer is not just affecting the lives of those who are diagnosed, but it touches on all those that live with and support a person who has been stricken. Living with cancer can be debilitating as people undergo treatment, and not just for those that undergo their treatment, but for the family and friends that act as the support system.

The Race On The Base 5K Walk is not just about cancer patients. It is not just about cancer survivors. It is about the community of support that exists for those that are not only stricken, but for their family members, for their friends. It is about the network that is there when you have been told that you have the disease and the help you will need in dealing with this life changing event. It is there when you are told that a loved one has been stricken, and you need help and support so that you can be their help and support.  It is there for those who have been the help and support of a loved one who has passed on.

The Cancer Support Foundation is entirely self-supporting, raising money through fund raisers, grants and community donations. All donated funds stay right here in our community and all of the services provided are free of charge.

This year’s Race On The Base events include: a 5K Run, 10K Run, 5K Walk (now timed!) in cooperation with the Cancer Support Foundation, 10K In-Line Skate/Wheelchair, and Mission: Kids Run, and the Reverse Triathlon which consists of a 5K Run, 12 Mile Bike, and 200 Meter Swim at the USA Water Polo National Training Center on the Joint Forces Training Base. The event also features an exceptional vendor area, $5 All You Can Eat Pancake Breakfast and free Family Fun Zone.

Is it even safe to run on the base? I am sure I heard about a potential hazard over there. It had to do with the base bursting into flames and destroying the city do to a formerly out of control composting pile. Maybe to be safe, all the participants can run while carriying a fire extinguisher. Los Al should just outlaw composting. I have heard there may even be folks composting in the back yards. Too bad Los Al can’t do anything about them? My guess is that they are on top of it.

Hey Scared Runner. It is ok for Los Al to use the Base when they need something. It is only a problem, when the Base wants to use the city. That is when Los Al is not going to be pushed around. I know people, who know people and they tell me, there should be little to no chance of a fire on the 27th. I thought everyone knew this by now. I guess there are still some people out there that don’t know how Los Al operates.

come on kids… let’s be nice.

This is a good thing. It is a great program that has been running for years and shows what can be done when the City, the JFTB and local community non-profits work together to get some good accomplished.

And let’s not forget the local businesses that stand up and sponsor this event.
