Coming soon to an onramp near you!

(4/19/2009, Los Alamitos)  In case the flashing lights of the past month weren’t enough, you’re not going to be able to get onto the 605 Freeway northbound from Katella westbound until about 5 a.m. next Monday, April 27th.

The logical alternate would be to use the Cerritos Ave. onramp, but that could get jammed up fairly quickly.  Next option would be to go north to Carson or even Del Amo and get on there.

This is not directly related to the carpool lane connectors and expansion of the Seal Beach Blvd/405 bridge planned for 2010 – 2013 (click here for photos & details on that major project, which will see Seal Beach Blvd. shrink to one lane in each directon!).  Rather, it’s part of a reconditioning of the 605.

Here’s the details, from a Caltrans Construction Update dated 3/20/2009:

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has begun a $6 million roadway rehabilitation project on SR 605, 405, and 22 in the cities of Seal Beach, Los Alamitos, Long Beach, and Rossmoor.
This project will replace and grind existing roadway pavement, reconstruct the Katella onramp to the northbound (NB) 605, and install guardrail at various locations. The work is being done at night under freeway closures commencing at 10pm. Work will also include a full ramp closure of the Katella onramp in mid-April beginning Friday April 17th at 10pm and ending on Monday April 27th at 5am (this could be subject to change and we will keep you updated).

Currently, the replacement and grinding of the existing roadway pavement on the NB 605 is underway and will continue for the next two weeks.  [3/21 - 4/4]   These improvements will help to reduce noise eminating from the roadway and provide a smoother road surface. Project construction is scheduled to be completed in September 2009.

In a construction zone, motorists are reminded to “slow for the cone zone” be alert, and proceed with caution.   For information updates about this project or any other freeway project in Orange County, contact the ORANGE COUNTY TRANSPORTATION HELPLINE at 1-800-724-0353, Caltrans Public Information Office at  (949) 724-2341 or (949) 724-2644, or log on to Caltrans website at www.dot.ca.gov/dist12 .

May be a good week to try out the bikeway to head north?

When the project starts to fix the 22/405, the Seal Beach bridge will be one lane each way for 10 months. WOW! Glad they’re not doing the 605/Katella project at the same time.

I hope they are make the on ramp at least five lanes. We will need them for all the extra traffic that will not be using the Seal Beach on ramp during that construction.

Actually, one of the key things I noticed them pushing was the use of Willow to Studebaker to the 405 North and using Studebaker as the primary method of getting past the bridge closure to 7th Street.

I have been using the Willow-Studebaker path for the last few weeks as a friend of mine bought a 4-Unit near the traffic circle and it’s the fastest way to get there (via Atherton (sp?)). Overall the traffic volume is much lower than the LosAl-SB Blvd route and I think that once people get familiar with the route that many will actually make this a major change in their driving habits as a way to get into LB (for instance going to Trader Joes) from Los Al.

It should be interesting to see what sticks with people when this is all over.
