(Los Alamitos, 1/19/2012)  These tips were posted on the Los Al P.D.’s blog shortly after yesterday’s attack. They’re good advice for all of us, even here in “Mayberry:”

The following are some general personal safety tips:

• Be aware of your surroundings. Headphones and other distractions divert your attention and you may not hear or notice persons approaching you.

• Trust your intuition. If you feel threatened or something doesn’t feel right, take action immediately.

• Travel with groups of friends.

• Know where there are safe places in the areas where you live, work and play, such as where there are groups of people and other activity.

• Avoid shortcuts that take you through alleys, passageways, and other isolated areas.

• Don’t let strangers get too close to you, even if they seem to have a reason. Protect your personal space.

• Carry as few items of value as possible. Be discreet with your belongings.

• Walk with a purpose. Know where you are going ahead of time.

• Have a plan before you see trouble. Be prepared to cross a street or duck into a store, if needed.

• Carry a small amount of cash, and only the credit cards that you intend to use.

• If carrying a wallet, carry it in a front pocket.

• Leave your expensive electronics and jewelry at home.

• Don’t wear clothing or shoes that restrict your movement.

• Do not resist or take action that would jeopardize your own safety. Your property is not worth injury or worse.

• If victimized, make mental notes of the suspect’s appearance, suspect’s vehicle description, and, if possible, memorize the vehicle license plate.

• If you see a suspicious person or situation, do not hesitate to call the policeimmediately. In Los Alamitos, dial (562) 594-7232 for our 24-Hour Dispatch. If it is an emergency, dial 9-1-1.

Below are two emails sent to the RPMT in Rossmoor. Please read and be aware. What happens to them happens to us. The Rossmoor Highlands just received the AM VETS card as well.

    Crime Concerns:

Yesterday (Kensington/Bostonian) a man came to the door knocked for a long time then came into the backyard and to our sliding door…he noticed my daughter looking through the blinds…he went back to the
front door knocked again stating he was there to run a line to the pool equipment…My daughter knew it wasn’t our pool man and did not answer the door. The dogs were in the house so he left. We are not having any work done on our pool. So I can assume by him knocking on the front door then coming around back that he was checking to see if anyone was home. This is getting ridiculous. I am not sure what the police can do but we need to do something. Hispanic man, with go-tee, early forties, wearing an orange vest. Sue
Dear Sue, please make sure your kids know how to call the Sheriff and a neighbor or someone who lives close by that can come over right away. Having the Sheriff’s number on speed dial also helps.

I live on the 2600 block of Woodstock off of Martha Ann. Myself and
two other neighbors put out donations on curb 3 days apart for Am Vet Charity to pick up. We made appt’s. Our goods were taken, we thought, by the charity, but could not figure out why we did not get receipts? The next day after my pick up, I had a message on my answering machine from Am Vets stating a driver had been there twice and there was nothing on my curb. It then dawned on me, that someone is casing our neighborhood and taking our donations. We had the Am Vet paper attached to our goods. We all know that we have lookie lou’s and weekend garage sale warriors, but my concern was, they have to be driving down our street on a regular basis to get lucky enough to get 3 hauls at 3 different house 3 days apart. Then I thought, what else are they eyeballing as they drive by. Hence, your email about someone finding other people’s empty boxes in their trash that had been taken and emptied. Which is exactly where my thoughts were going. So, i myself, will no longer put anything out on the curbs for donation. I will personally take it. A lot of those donation slips give a day they are going by in your area, so these people may be taking them and doing drive by’s on those days. Cathy
