(Los Alamitos, 2/15/2012) It’s Wednesday, time once again for our weekly post where you can report and/or comment on items of interest you come across in any of our local media.
First, Larry Strawther & the gang at our Community & Schools Media Partnership (youtube.com/csmptv) already have the video last night’s two hour Rossmoor Community Services District meeting up.
I went on the R.C.S.D.’s website, which I personally found more up to date and more useful than Los Alamitos’ website, except that. . . I couldn’t find a link to last night’s agenda
Predators in Rossmoor’s Parks?
Speaking of Rossmoor, this morning’s News Enterprise had an interesting letter complaining ab0ut the Rossmoor Predator Management Team’s campaign to have leash laws enforced in Rossmoor Parks following a vicious attack by an unleashed dog.
This was apparently too much for Amanda Lenton, who couldn’t bear to see her neighbor forced to put a leash on his Golden Retriever puppy at 6 am. As a jogger who frequently must go out of my way and pray hard to avoid unleashed dogs at our own Little Cottonwood Park, I must confess I have more sympathy for the leash laws than for Ms. Lenton’s neighbor. After all, there is a dog park off Lampson not that far away.

Please briefly describe what caught your eye before commenting diplomatically, & please include a brief topic in place of your “name,” giving your real name or handle in the comment itself.

I am fascinated that you interpreted my article that way. It is not the enforcement of the leash-law that I am upset about, it is the manner in which the RPMT uses it’s members names to support causes. We signed up to get emails about coyote activity in Rossmoor, yet now they use those names and emails in other ways. Not only is this practice shameful, it may be illegal.
And seriously with that picture of the vicious dog? I mean, seriously?
The leash law is there for a reason. You may have never been charged or bitten by a dog who looks like the picture on this post, but there are people who have. If you think you and your neighbor don’t have to follow the laws then just be prepared to pay the consequences.
I am grateful to the RPMT for having the guts to stand up to people who think they are above the law.
I speak from personal experience of walking my dog on leash for 15 years carrying a ski pole. I had to use that pole several times against lose dogs with the owner close by. NO ONE has a dog who is trained to follow commands well enough to be off leash. Sometimes the dogs you least expect to be aggressive are the worst.
Dog walkers and joggers always be aware of the dog owner who says “He’s friendly or he won’t bite” that is the most clueless of all dog owners.
Dave, you should jog with a ski pole, a dog could not get close to you as you poke him in the face and it has a nice sharp point on it. Not one of the dogs who charged me made it passed the ski pole. In 15 years I had to use it about 10 times. Worked like a charm.
I’m sorry but the bottom line is you do not ask and collect email addresses for one cause and then use them for a completely different one. You are spamming people. Start a new list of emails and names for people who are interested in this cause. Which is not about coyotes.
you can ask to have your name removed at any time if you don’t like the action being taken
It’s funny. I train for marathons in Los al, seal, and Rossmoor at least 4 days a week. Why is it that I don’t have to run with a weapon? I have never had an encounter with a dog. I’ve seen owners with unleashed dogs – but I do my thing and they do theirs. Aren’t there bigger problems to worry about?
Absolutley. While the RCSD and RPMT spent precious time and energy patting themselves on the back for tree planting, and pooch patrols, the elephant in the room…The Shops at Rossmoor…was eating away at your quality of life.
Safety is the main concern for the leaders of any community, that should be job one. The Shops are just fluff, we can live without shops, but you can’t live without safety It sounds like you have just been lucky Cecila
