(1/29/2010) A number of important zoning and planning issues will be on the table this Monday, 2/1/2010, when the Los Alamitos City Council meets jointly with the Planning Commission at 5:30, before the Council’s Regular Meeting.

Key issues on the agenda include the SKAG Compass Corridors Grant, the Medical Center Specific Plan, Priorities for the Year, General Plan issues,  and the Rossmoor Highlands and Greenbrook Wall Standards.

Here are the key items up for consideration, according to the Staff Agenda Report:

1. Discussion of Relationship Between Planning Commission and City Council, including but not limited to:

  • Defining Priorities
  • Needs of the Commission
  • Frequency of Commission Meetings
  • Joint Meetings with the Council
  • Expectations of Staff
  • Use of Ad Hoc/Standing Committees

2. Discussion of Process Regarding Long-Term Issues, including but not limited to:

  • SCAG’S Compass Blueprint Demonstration Project – Corridors  (Staff will provide an update and will be seeking direction as to the future roles of the Planning Commission and the Council in the project. Future General Plan What should be the role of the General Plan Ad Hoc Committee and what role should the Commission play?)
  • Explanation of “Sphere of Influence”  (Staff will provide an update and explanation and respond to questions.)
  • Potential Community Development/Redevelopment Agency formation Is there an interest in agendizing this as a future discussion item?)

3. Discussion of Status and Process Regarding Short-Term Issues, including but not limited to:

  • Potential LAFCO changes
  • Los Alamitos Medical Center Specific Plan
  • Rossmoor Highlands/College Park North/Greenbrook Wall Standards

These topics are to be discussed in a general manner, according to the staff report:

The discussion is intended to provide both the City Council and the Planning Commission with an overview of the current status of various land use and planning issues in and around Los Alamitos and to discuss the process by which the City Council and the Planning Commission will work together to address such issues.

These topics are not intended to garner support or seek opinions from the City Council or the Planning Commission. For reasons of due process, the City Council and Planning Commission must exercise caution not to express opinions on the merits of these issues at this early stage without the appropriate notice and public hearing. Notwithstanding these legal limitations, the City Council and the Planning Commission are free to discuss these topics with the goal of reaching a mutual understanding of what the process will be in addressing these issues, the future role of the Commission and Council as they relate to these issues.

This sounds like an important meeting, but I imagine it won’t be on Los Al TV.  Might be a good day to stop by City Hall on your way home.
