5:45 p.m. Wednesday:  This just in:  Los Al Fire Station now has sand bags, just stop by the front entrance before 9:30 p.m. or after 7 a.m.  The sand at the north of the Los Al City Hall parking lot is supposed to be accessible 24/7, but you may need to bring your own shovel.

Sand and sand bags are also available at the downtown Seal Beach Fire Station (behind Walt’s Warf).  The worst downpour is expected mid morning Thursday.

1:30 p.m. update: Latest weather reports make it sound like we’ll have some pretty intense rain and winds around 3:30 – 4:30 today, followed by “the big one” mid morning tomorrow, Thursday.  More info below.

11:30 a. m. update:  Fire station & city hall out of  sand bags, city hall still has sand.  Other options might include heavy duty trash bags, pillow cases, or waiting & hoping Ganahl’s shipment finally comes in (details below)

(01/20/2010, Los Alamitos) Many Los Alamitos City residents are being auto-called by the Los Al Police Department with a warning of extremely heavy rains and possible flooding this afternoon.

The message warns thatthe coming storm is expected to be worse than yesterdays, which caused flooding along Farquhar, Howard (in both Apartment Row and Carrier Row), Portal, Serpentine, and westbound Katella east of Lexington (by Cottonwood Church).  (See “Los Al drains overwhelmed? Rain’s over, water’s rising!“)

Worse flooding is expected today in those locations.

Residents are urged to avoid driving during and immediately after the worst parts of that storm–which probably means all afternoon!

Sand & Sand Bag Details

Sand is available for Los Alamitos residents and businesses at the north end of the City Hall parking lot, as well as sand bags while supplies last.  A maximum of 3 sand bags per residence is allowed, which would at least cover one door.   When I checked with City Hall at 10:30 they said about fifteen people were waiting to fill sand bags, so you might speed things up if you bring your own shovel.

Sand bags (but not sand) are also available for both Rossmoor and Los Al residents at the Fire Station on Green St. east of Los Al Blvd. in Apartment Row.

Sand is also available for 35 cents a shovel full at South Coast Building Supply across Cerritos Ave. from Los Al High, but they ran out of sand bags earlier today.

Pre filled sand bags are expected to arrive at Ganahl Lumber (562-346-2100) around 1 – 2 p.m. today, Wednesday and sell for $1.49 per bag.

I’m not aware of any flooding in Rossmoor, but Rossmoor residents would have to pick up sand bags (while they last) from the fire station and then buy their sand at South Coast Building supply.

The message also stated to stay away from windows as tornados could be expected. After what we experienced yesterday, its not just Los Al with the flooding problems. Lampson was a river, as was Knott, Ball Road and just about everywhere in the OC. We were very afraid our car would stall out. If you are traveling in a truck or SUV, please be considerate to others in lower vehicles. Don’t drive fast because your truck is higher off the ground.

Seems it never rains in Southern California
Seems I’ve often heard that kind of talk before
    It never rains in California
But girl, don’t they warn ya
    It pours man it pours

When your sitting in the car for 3.5 hours for a 40 minute trip, this song never stops running through your head.

The sandbags at the Fire Station went fast yesterday. We had 30 people in less than an hour. Went through about 500 bags in 2 days and still going. The empty bags are still at the fire stations. Sand has been available at the Los Al, Seal Beach, Cypress, Stanton City Yards and Fire Stations 3 and 44 (Sunset Beach and downtown Seal Beach). There was also a sand pile at a locked gate on the Weapons Depot on Seal Beach Blvd. (on the beach side of PCH). Ganahl has them pre-filled for a cost and South Coast Supply supposedly had them too. If you like one stop shopping and want to contribute to the Los Al tax base, I would suggest supporting those two great local businesses. Otherwise the fire station sand bags and city sand is free to local residents and businesses. You just need to fill them yourself. It takes about 6 sandbags to cover a slider and three for a doorway and 10-12 for a garage door. 2-3 full shovel scoops of sand per bag and your set.
