(9/7/2011, Los Alamitos)Before I give you the 12 trucks for this week and for next, here’s some breaking news:  I just received word that the Tuesday truck fest has moved from Los Alamitos across Katealla to Cypress’s Los Alamitos Race Track.

I’m tempted to say “Nice move, city fathers–drive another source of revenue directly across the street to Cypress, right on our border.”

However, as best I can tell the local business that was hosting the Tuesday night event lost interest, opening the door for Cypress to step in.

The challenge, once again, seems to be not that our Los Alamitos officials did something wrong as much as that Read more

Monday’s 7 p.m. regular Council meeting has a heavy and interesting agenda, primarily consisting of 4 “Discussion Items,” 8 A – D on the agenda, in order:

8A: $35,000 for “Outreach” on Los Al Blvd.

(Pages 37 – 68 of the agenda package)  The “Los Alamitos Blvd. Revitalization Project” seems to only focus on Los Al  between Katella & Cerritos.    When the Council first received SCAGs “Compass Blueprint” for Katella and Los Alamitos Blvd., I was surprised the Council immediately chose to focus only on this one city block of Los Al Blvd.  Especially since the proposal was to slow traffic by narrowing the already congested artery which is the only through north-south street between Studebaker Rd. and Valley View.

Originally the Council’s  idea was for the city to seek grant money to proceed.  However, when none was forthcoming, the Council just Read more

(6/12/2011, Los Alamitos) Maps are now out for the proposed new legislative districts resulting from the first redistricting since California voters approved a new, independent, non-partisan redistricting commission.

Big Move in Congressional District

As we predicted (see “Los Al moving to Long Beach District“), Los Alamitos (including Rossmoor) was moved from Ed Royce’s inland, northwest Orange County 40th Congressional District (shown in the above maps)  to a proposed “Long Beach Port” District.  90720 is the only Orange County zip code in the Long Beach District, which also includes Hawaiian Gardens, Cerritos, Lakewood, and Paramount.  (For interactive maps, see links at the end of this post)

(3/20/2011)The devastation of Japan’s recent earthquake and resulting tsunami should put a certain amount of fear or at least concern in every Californian.  Certainly in those of us in Los Alamitos, living between the famed San Andreas Fault and the Inglewood-Newport Fault that destroyed much of Long Beach in 1933.

If you, like me, are updating your earthquake preparedness supplies, you might just want to include a copy of the ancient Hebrew hymn that almost seems like it was composed for Californians, or anyone whose world is being shaken  by forces beyond their control (bolding mine, the term “Selah” is probably a call for a musical interlude.  Some commentators translate it “pause, and consider that!”):

Psalm 46:  God Is Our Fortress

To the choirmaster. Of the Sons of Korah. According to Alamoth. [1] A Song.

1 God is our refuge and strength,
a very present [2] help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way,
though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea,
3 though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah Read more

(3/16/2011, Los Alamitos)  Today we’re combining our weekly “your reporting & comments” on the local paper post with tonight’s Base Open House on the plan to move an Army Reserve Aviation Company with 8  Black Hawk helicopters to Los Alamitos from Victorville (details at yesterday’s post on the move & Open House).

If you get a chance to make it to tonight’s Open House at the Veteran’s Service Center at the Base, please let us know what you learned and what you thought with your comments below.

If something catches your eye in today’s News Enterprise or tomorrow’s Sun, or any other newspaper, blog, or website that you think might interest our community, this is your opportunity to point it out & comment.

(11/16/2010, Los Alamitos)  I didn’t check Sunday’s total, but in the 2 days of vote counting since I last checked on Saturday night about 8 more Los Alamitos ballots were counted, with 4 going to Dean Zarkos and 3 to Gerri Mejia, taking her lead down from 26 to 25.

Here’s the latest totals: Read more

(Los Alamitos, 11/10/2010) A conciliatory tone was struck by candidates in today’s News Enterprise front page story on the election, and carried on to the two letters to the editor.

Los Al Football!

Perhaps the most significant item was a reminder of tomorrow’s 7 p.m. football game between our Los Al Griffins and Edison for the Sunset League title and high seeding in the playoffs.  The teams have identical 7 -2 records going into the face-off, and The Register currently has Los Al ranked # 6 in the OC with Edison close behind at #9.  This game is so big it’s Prime Ticket’s High School Game of the week at 7:30 Thursday night, but it’s so close why not put on a warm coat and drive over to Vets off Clark in Long Beach & cheer our Griffins on in person.

Dean Grose, who continues to “look forward to the opportunity to provide public service did manage to imply his supporters were “intimidated and their property vandalized” without going into detail.   Anybody ready for Dean’s Read more

Dave Emerson here. We’ve been receiving more citizen contributions lately through the “contact us” button at the top of each page. I put some into the “Curious Minds” post of a week ago, this time I thought I’d try a separate post from a “Concerned Citizen” who wishes to remain anonymous, although I really doubt you’d know this Los Al resident even if I told you this citizen’s name.

In any case, contributions from local residents and businesses are very much appreciated, regardless of the individual’s point of view.  I’d really like to see this blog become less of an individual’s site and more of a community forum.

If you’ve got concerns to express, you can e-mail them to us via the “Contact us” button, or post them under the appropriate article, or under our “Curious Minds” post if they don’t fit in elsewhere.

(Los Alamitos, 7/31/2010)   A few months back I filled out a questionnaire that the City was offering as a way for local citizens to have input on future commercial  development. Good idea, right?

Well, a more detailed reading of the  Commercial Corridor Plan from Compass Blueprint seemed to reveal that at  the heart of the project was the Southern California Association of  Governments (SCAG) and Orange County Transit Authority (OCTA).  And the  plan is actually a prelude to Read more

(Los Alamitos, 6/9/2010) Former Los Alamitos Mayor Dean Grose appeared to continue somewhat of a political comeback yesterday, coming in 5th out of 12 candidates for the Republican Party’s County Central Committee for the 67th Assembly District.  (Seats went to the top six candidates, see official results in table below.)

Dean  got more votes than four of the six incumbents, and he handily beat former Read more

"Lowest unqualified bidder?"

(6/2/2010, Los Alamitos)  If you live in Los Alamitos, and were thinking about putting the trash out tonight (Wednesday), you’ll be happy to know that’s one task you can put off until tomorrow.

With the holiday on Monday, trash pick up in Los Alamitos, as well as most surrounding areas, is one day later this week, as is normal practice with Consolidated Disposal and most other firms, on major holidays.

If my memory serves correctly, which it still does sometimes, that also means no street sweeping or tickets this week if your street sweeping day is the day after your trash day.

Based on search engine terms that have sent people to this site in the last few days, I know some people were wondering about that, so I decided to answer that unasked question.

You’re welcome.

(12/25/2009, Los Alamitos)  The Los Alamitos City Council’s last Regular Meeting of the year has a heavy agenda of items, due in part to the cancelation of what would have been the first Regular Meeting of 2010.    But before the Council can get to that heavy agenda at 7 p.m. Monday night, they have a special meeting called for 5:30 p.m. to Read more

(12/4/2009, 7:54 A.M.)  Forget my ship coming in–I’d just like my “morning” newspaper to arrive while it’s still morning.  Preferably before I leave for my first appointment!

There still doesn’t seem to be much improvement in the  late delivery in Los Alamitos of the three main daily print newspapers that we first mentioned here two weeks ago.

Reporting from the “south of Farquahr” front, after a couple of days of on-time delivery while a “supervisor” was apparently Read more
