April Fools (sadly): Prologis to “do the right thing,” NOT. . . yet

April 1, 2013 in 2013 Issues, Cypress, Decency, LART ("Los Al Race Track" property), Safety, Traffic

(Los Alamitos, 4/1/2013)  Important 3:00 pm update:  This is the 2013 version of our traditional “if only” April 1 post.  Sorry, but this hasn’t happened. . . yet.  But read on for the way we hope it will go down, if we work together to keep mobilizing our neighborhoods, whether in Cypress, West Garden Grove, Rossmoor, or Los Alamitos.

In a stunning reversal, Prologis executives responded to building community opposition  late Sunday by announcing that they had concluded “the only ethical and responsible action for us to take is to abandon our plans for a 33 acre, 750,000 square foot industrial complex on Katella Ave. on the site of the former Cypress Race Track.”

Reached by e-mail, ProLogis’ Vice President Transaction Officer Nancy Schultz indicated the decision was based on a greater understanding to the traffic patterns and residents’ concerns expressed over the last two weeks:

Prologis VP Nancy

SchultzAt our March 19th open house residents made aware of the severity of gridlock at peak hours on Katella, and the lack of viable alternative routes.

We have concluded that the truck and automobile traffic caused by a 750,000 square foot facility with roughly 150 truck bays is not compatible with the location.

Equally significant, we learned more about vote last November to change the property’s  Read the rest of this entry →

Time to e-mail your toxic trucking EIR concerns

March 31, 2013 in 2013 Issues, LART ("Los Al Race Track" property), Our Future, Safety, Traffic

(3/31/2013, Los Alamitos) There’s a speeding big rig headed straight into our neighborhoods!   Actually, hundreds of them!

The good news is, before those trucks can actually hit our streets, the good people at ProLogis have to pay for an Environmental Impact Report.

The bad news is, you and I only have two days left to request that our concerns be addressed in that report.

The good news is, I’ve discovered an easy way to do that, that’s not disclosed in the official “Notice of Preparation.”

There are several reasons you and each of your neighbors would be well advised to file your concerns before the public comment period ends on this Tuesday, April 2, 2013:

  1. A record is kept of what concerns are raised and how many inputs received.
  2. You have the right to request certain impacts be addressed, like increases to drive through traffic at peak hours on your block.  At 5 p.m. Tuesday, you lose that right.
  3. If you supply your name and a mailing address, you should be informed directly of every step of the process from now on.
  4. There is little doubt ProLogis is Read the rest of this entry →

Los Al Council votes 5 – 0 to oppose Prologis project

audience 3 28 special on prologis before closed(Los Alamitos, 3/28/2013)   Wow!

A large crowd turned out tonight on short notice at 6 on a work night to strongly encourage the Los Alamitos City Council to take strong action to block the proposed ProLogis trucking & industrial site on Katella.

Between the crowd at the Council Meeting and all the families turning out for “Friday Night Lights” on Thursday night, all spaces within sight were filled, including the huge SuperMedia lot!  Wonder where they’ll park when SuperMedia’s sold.  How about in a brand spanking new OC County Regional Park on Katella between Cottonwood Church and the Race Track?

HG: Cypress trucks: Hazardous to our health!

March 28, 2013 in 2013 Issues, Cypress, Decency, Highlands Guy's Thursday Columns, LART ("Los Al Race Track" property), Our Future, Planning & Community Development, Safety, Traffic

Dave E here.  As most of our readers know by now, our Thursday columnist is a fairly mellow, thinking moderate who thinks like a creative engineer.  He cares deeply about our community, but he’s no raving community activist.

That’s why we all need to take his warnings in this article very seriously.  Especially if we care about our region’s kids and seniors!

(Los Alamitos, 3/28/2013)  by Highlands Guy

The more I read in Let’s Fix Los Al (and not in the New Enterprise, the Sun, the L A Times, nor the Orange County Register) about the impending monster on our border, the more apprehensive I become.

There are folks who have already put forth arguments related to traffic and noise pollution, increased accidents, and a general downgrading of quality of life issues, resulting from the proposed huge trucking facility.

Today I would like to offer some insight from the perspective of health concerns that will definitely affect us all, but will have the most impact to our children.

In an article last  December  the National Institutes of Health analyzed ‘hot spots’ where concentrations of air toxics— Read the rest of this entry →

You could run but you can’t hide from CalTrans!

(Rossmoor, 3/25/2013) Zombie Invasion, The Walking Dead by Dave Lara:

Bang, Bang, Bang, Bang, Bang, Bang. It’s 6:00 in the morning and for the last 18 hours the sounds of a teenager bouncing a basketball on our roof.

Unfortunately, it’s not a teenager, it’s CalTrans and their construction at the 405/605 Freeways. For the past year, during the day and night there has been the construction noise of trucks backing up, loads being dropped and drills/saws being used. But now they have added an additional item of torture. Read the rest of this entry →

Cypress Council set to support initiative to eliminate more open space

March 24, 2013 in 2013 Issues, City Council, Cypress, Decency, LART ("Los Al Race Track" property), Planning & Community Development, Safety, Traffic

(3/24/2013, Cypress, CA)  Apparently  ProLogis’ massive 33 acre industrial/trucking development on Katella is just the tip of the iceberg!

A “Consent Calendar” item on Monday’s Cypress City Council Agenda calls for the Council to support an imitative measure to rezone to industrial about 36 acres of opens space along Cerritos Ave just north of the ProLogis site.

But wait, there’s more!  The same initiative, which is sponsored by one of the Race Track’s owners, also seeks to rezone another 11.2 acres within the Race Course property as well.

They’ve managed to come up with a Read the rest of this entry →

There goes the neighborhood? or worse?

March 21, 2013 in 2013 Issues, Highlands Guy's Thursday Columns, LART ("Los Al Race Track" property), Our Future, Our Priorities, Planning & Community Development, Safety, Traffic

(Los Alamitos, 3/21/2013)  (Dave E here:) Wow!  Until I read HG’s column for this week I thought the biggest impacts from all those trucks ProLogis wants to run down Katella and Los Al Blvd were more gridlock, resulting in more cut-through traffic in  both Dutch Havens, Carrier Row, and Apartment Row, noise pollution, and accidents and  fatalities from all those trucks

I assumed air pollution from today’s trucks was no longer a problem.  Sadly, I was wrong, as you’ll learn as you peruse HG’s latest article.

by Highlands’ Guy:  In last week’s column, while talking about ‘just who are we’ I mentioned some data about local air quality that is at an unhealthy level much of the time due to how close we are to the freeway.

A recent article right here in Let’s Fix Los Al about the planned imposition of a massive trucking facility, raised yet another red flag in the environmental arena.

Then, in Monday’s city council meeting I learned about Prologis, the mega-corporation that is imposing the huge truck terminal across the street from Carrier Row.

After thinking about these two issues, it dawned on me that there is a direct relationship between our air quality and Prologis. Thus, my theme this week will be to see if there are dots to connect that need to be Read the rest of this entry →

Video Highlights from Monday’s City Council Truckfest

March 20, 2013 in 2013 Issues, City Council Meetings, Decency, LART ("Los Al Race Track" property), Our Future, Traffic

prologis plans4cyp (2)(Los Alamitos 3/20/2013)  Well, the good folks at csmpTV  have uploaded almost 4 1/2 hours of video of Monday’s City Council Meeting.  You can click here if you want to watch the whole thing, but I’ve picked out a few highlights I found especially interesting which I”ve embedded below if you want to save 4 hours.

I’m focusing first on items relating to Prologis 33 acre “industrial” site with around 150 truck bays in its current configuration.  We’ll start out with two residents’ comments after the Council members shared their take on the matter, several stressing their desire for cooperation and trying to work things out with our “friends” in Cypress.

Prologis’ trucks jam local media

March 20, 2013 in 2013 Issues, City Council, LART ("Los Al Race Track" property), Local Media review & reporting, Our Future, Safety, Traffic, Your reporting and comments

(Los Alamitos, 3/20/2013)  Lots going on in the local Media this week!

Prologos hasn’t even broken ground (or got necessary approvals) for their  ”industrial facility” but news about their trucks is already jamming the local media.

Yup,  there’s been a lot of buzz about Prologis to place a bit of a pig in the poke in Cypress right across the street from one of Los Alamitos’ single family neighborhoods.

Once people started expressing concerns the two Prologis VPs at yesterday’s “Open House”  took the approach of “we don’t know who will lease it, but we aim for Read the rest of this entry →
