Victory at last!

(8/28/2011, Los Alamitos, Orange County, California) Does it get any better than this?

World Series, Championship Game.

Score tied, 1 – 1.

Bottom of the last inning of regulation play.

The newly crowned U.S. Champion, Huntington Beach’s Ocean View All Stars are at bat.

They have never made it to the Little League World Series before.

They have never led in this game.  They have never even Read more

(Los Alamitos, 6/4/2011)With summer almost here and the bikeway to the beach or El Dorado Park not far away, it may be time for a refresher on bike safety.

The most important rule is for drivers of motor vehicles:  Keep on the lookout for bikes!

  • For some reason bikes seem to be invisible to drivers, even if they aren’t talking on a phone!  (See # 5 in the NHSA’s bike safety tips below for the flip side of this.)
  • Drivers tend to underestimate the speed of many bikes.  A few years back I had a driver make a left turn directly in front of me into El Dorado Park Estates as I was heading west on Cerritos from Los Al Blvd.  A road bike has about 1 square inch of rubber meeting the road, which limits braking dramatically.  There was no way I could stop.  ”I didn’t think you Read more

(2/3/2011, Los Alamitos) by “Highlands Guy:” Each city is unique, with different resources, challenges and opportunities. Every city has a unique set of people with their own fears, hopes and dreams. Every city has it own unique culture. How would you make the city look? How would you make the city feel? How would you like others to think about Los Alamitos? What kind of city do you want your children to live in? If it’s not how you would like it to be, now is the time to take action. Get involved.

I’ll bet as you drive your kids to school, or on your way to work, or as you drive home from Von’s, you’ve said to yourself, “How come that pole is crooked”, or “Why isn’t there a bike lane”, or “I’d sure like to see a little Read more

(1/13/2011, Los Alamitos, CA)  I’m pretty sure you couldn’t do this anywhere else in North America.  In fact, as far as I know, you can’t do it anywhere else in the world.  Or the universe, for that matter.

Just one more reason we’re blessed to live here!

I’ve often bragged to friends who live elsewhere  about “surfing & skiing on the same day, but yesterday I actually did it, although the surf wasn’t nearly as epic as Mt. Baldy.

It started at 6:30 yesterday morning, as three Realtors assembled with our ski equipment in the parking lot of Prudential, California’s “605″ office.   We may have to work weekends, but at least we Read more

Maybe they call it the "Pistol" offense because it makes Bruin fans want to shoot themselves.

(12/5/2010)Today’s “Sunday Sermon” should appear this afternoon. This Sunday we’ll lead off with a morning eulogy to two one time football powerhouses.

It sure doesn’t look any better the morning after than it did at the Rose Bowl last night.

The most beautiful football stadium in Southern California saw one of the ugliest games in “Rivalry History” as our two great rivals stumbled across the finish line of a season in which neither team is bowl eligible, and very deservedly so.

The highlight for us UCLA fans lucky enough to sit near the student section was receiving the special U$C edition of the weekly “Dirt from the Den” flyer, slamming the TrOJans with such memorable lines as “Bruins drink apple juice because O.J. will kill you.”

My favorite was “The Trojan Web of Evil”  graphic linking USC to Osama Bin Laden, Richard Nixon, Ana Nicole Smith, and Adolph Hitler.

What really would have been scary would have been Read more

(11/19/2010, Los Alamitos, CA) In case you were wondering. . . .

  • Our Los Al Griffins lost a tough one Thursday night when the officials mistakenly ruled that Griffin wide receiver Richard Turner came down without the ball on what should have been the tying touchdown, as the Register photo to the right clearly indicates.    I’m sure the official did the best he could, and tying wouldn’t have Read more

(10 p.m., 11/21/09, by Dave Emerson)  Taking a brief break from Los Al news & politics, I made a discovery this evening I thought worth sharing with local sports fans.

Apparently Tuesday night’s blowout loss by the Angels (and possibly the ensuing melee of gloating Yankees fans) has resulted in a fairly large number of Angels season seat holders dumping their seats for Thursday’s game on Read more
