[Ed note: Dave is out of town and I have been asked to cover for him while he is gone. This is STILL Dave's space, but I know that he would have put something up on this event, so I will do so in his place. - JM Ivler]

Los Al drains overwhelmed? Rain’s over, water’s rising!

(1:50 p.m., 1/19/2010, Los Alamitos) Reporting from just west of Little Cottonwood Park: After one of the most intense downpours I’ve witnessed, it wasn’t surprising to see local streets filled above the curbs with water about a half hour ago.
Nor was it a surprise when the water began receding after the rain stopped.
What was a surprise was that Read more

Time to shut off your sprinklers!
Filed Under News you can use | 1 Comment
5/16/2010, Los Alamitos: With 4 to 8 inches of rain forecast locally for the coming week, Saturday night or Sunday morning might be an excellent time to shut off your sprinklers for a couple of weeks.
The storm is expected to blow in sometime Sunday, with sprinkles starting as early as mid-afternoon, and last into next weekend, according to Weather.com’s 10 day forecast for Los Alamitos (forecast may be updated by the time you click).
Mountain areas of Southern California could get as much as 20 inches of rain!
But that doesn’t mean that our drought is over, since our drinking water mainly comes from vastly depleted reservoirs north of here. Besides, you don’t want your neighbors laughing at you when your sprinklers are running in the rain on Monday!
So allow extra time to get to work Monday morning, drive very carefully, and experience a week in Seattle without ever leaving Los Alamitos!

Haiti Earthquake Relief: What we can do today
Filed Under Inspiration, News you can use | 6 Comments
(1/12/2010) As Californians we’re used to earthquakes, but not many reach the 7.0 magnitude of this afternoon’s disaster in Haiti.
Combine the huge earthquake with the poor quality of construction and readiness of the hemisphere’s poorest nation, and the projections of massive loss of life ring true.
Fortunately, helping out is as easy as a few mouse clicks. What is needed most, especially initially, are Read more

(12/18/2009, Los Alamitos) There are plenty of places around where you can purchase a Christmas tree. Over the years, Barb and I have discovered that the freshest, best trees at a very convenient location and for an excellent price. But that’s not the best part!
You see, in addition to receiving excellent service, when you buy a tree at our favorite local tree lot,

Was your paper late again today?
Filed Under News you can use | 21 Comments
(11/21/2009, Los Alamitos) If you live in Los Alamitos or Rossmoor, and possibly some of our neighb0ring West Orange County communities, you may have noticed your newspaper arriving late this week. . . or not arriving at all.
I was away the first part of the week, but on Wednesday my paper never did arrive, although I posted a missed paper request online prior to the 10:00 a.m. deadline.
On Thursday, a very frazzled couple was slowly working their way around my cul de sac at 8:30, as several neighbors waited in their driveways. They would stop for what seemed like several minutes in front of most houses, then sometimes toss a paper and move on, other times back up a house or two and start over.
They made the 8 a.m. gridlock on Los Al Blvd. at Katella look like a wide open freeway! At least you don’t have to back up on Los Al!
Here’s what’s going on: Read more

(10/31/2009, by Dave Emerson) You can protest, but it won’t do any good.
So it’s probably best to just get with the program and set your clock back an hour before you go to bed tonight.
If I get the post up as planned, you can use some of that extra hour to review Read more

(10 p.m., 11/21/09, by Dave Emerson) Taking a brief break from Los Al news & politics, I made a discovery this evening I thought worth sharing with local sports fans.
Apparently Tuesday night’s blowout loss by the Angels (and possibly the ensuing melee of gloating Yankees fans) has resulted in a fairly large number of Angels season seat holders dumping their seats for Thursday’s game on Read more

Los Al Med Center's last major project
(by Dave Emerson) The potential impact of future medical development in town has got some citizens concerned about impacts on traffic, future development, and potential for expanding Los Alamitos’ sales tax base.
The Los Alamitos City Council is slated to further discuss the issue near the end of this Monday’s Regular Council meeting in response to an interesting letter from former Read more

(6/30/09, Los Alamitos) Sounds like this year’s 4th Celebration at the Joint Forces Training Base may be the biggest and best ever. Bands, speeches, and two big flyovers are just part of what’s planned. And, once again, admitance is free!

“O.I.C.” Artesia’s “Bloodless” Bullfights challenged by animal rights group
Filed Under Neighboring Communities, News you can use | Leave a Comment

(5/26/09, by Dave Emerson) We Realtors come across all sorts of little known facts in the course of our work. I still remember how startled I was over twenty years ago to learn that there’s an active bull ring in our neighboring town of Artesia. Having grown up in Lakewood with a great aunt living in Artesia, I was surprised I’d never heard about it.
Artesia has a variety of ethnic communities, including Portuguese-Americans, Asian Indian-Americans, and some Argentine-Americans. The bull ring has been located behind the Portuguese Community Center in Artesia for years.

O.C. Human Relations calls neighborhood meeting Wednesday, 5/27
Filed Under 2009 Issues, News you can use | Leave a Comment
5/20: Wednesday morning update. Due to a prior commitment I will not be able to attend this informal meeting, but would love to have at least one person report back to us on what took place. If you can stop by and report back, please mention it in a comment below now, then report back after the meeting by way of another comment. If nobocy’s volunteered yet, maybe you’d like to try your hand at being a neighborhood reporter! The more the better.
The idea here really is to make this a community website, not my website. Here’s your chance!
(Los Alamitos, 5/26/2009, by Dave Emerson) In an effort to respond to issues raised in April by the hate crime/vandalism/grafitti in Apartment Row, the Orange County Human Relations Commission has called an informal meeting at Little Cottonwood Park this Wednesday evening from 6 – 7.
I spoke with James Armendaris about the meeting today, who indicated it was called to allow the community, especially those living in Apartment Row, to address concerns with representatives from the Los Alamitos Police Department. In addition there will be a representative from the Anti-Defamation League as well as a victim’s advocate.
At the time of the incident concerns were expressed Read more
