Boston Marathon bombing: The blessing of unanswered prayer

April 21, 2013 in Inspiration, News you can use, Weekend Wisdom

(Los Alamitos, 4/21/2013)  Our “weekend wisdom” posts are from a spiritual perspective.  Today’s focuses on a personal tale related to last week’s tragic events in Boston.

I assist  for several hours every month on a prayer hotline at my church.  Basically, we pray with  church members and others who call in with prayer requests for themselves or others.

Over the last several months I took several calls from a track coach in San Diego who was praying that he could accompany the athletes he coached to this year’s Boston Marathon.  In the past, Nike had paid for him to go, but Read the rest of this entry →

Autism: There is real hope!

April 19, 2013 in 2013 Issues, National Issues, News you can use, Schools

(6/10/2013,  Los Alamitos)  For those of  you who know someone with an autistic child, this article is a must read!  It’s a  personal story about the grandson of our former Councilman and my neighbor and friend, Art Debolt, in his own words. It was originally written on January 1, 2013, and is followed by an update I received just three days ago:

by Art DeBolt:   Dr. Michael J. Goldberg a pediatrician in Tarzana CA has found that approximately 90% of the “autistic’ children he sees, test positive for the herpes-6 virus and have food allergies that stress the immune system.

This virus attacks the brain facilitated by stresses to the immune system. He is successfully treating these children and teenagers, including my 5yr old grandson Eli with anti-viral and anti-fungal medications. In addition the diet is modified to remove certain foods with known allergic properties that can stress the immune system.

Eli’s story:  The first 2 years of standard treatment

Until sixty days ago my grandson Eli has received approximately 30-35 hours a week of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy, at a cost of approximately $50,000 per Read the rest of this entry →

In Memorium. Again. Across the continent, yet close to home.

(Los Alamitos, 4/16/2013)”The Race on the Base” isn’t the Boston Marathon, but they have a lot in common.

Thousands spending months in preparation.

Friends and family coming out to cheer.

An event that pulls a community together.

Capped by a race, exertion, completion, exhileraton, joy . . .

but, until Monday, 4/15/13,  no one would expect. . .

an explosion

chaos

pain

blood

and death.

As someone who’s run in a few marathons, I can imagine myself or my brother-in-law running towards that finish line, exhausted but exhilarated  . .

or my wife and kids at the end cheering. . . and then. . . a huge blast, pain, confusion. . .

Another grim reminder to never, never take those we love for granted.

Our kids, parents, siblings, spouses, neighbors. . . Los Al PD, OCFD, yes, even our Council Members. . . .

But this post is above politics.

It’s a reminder to keep the victims, their families, our first responders, our military, our leaders and our nation in our thoughts and prayers and hearts.

It’s an opportunity for you to express your perspective and thoughts,

for us to affirm what matters most,

to reflect

to pray

to put life’s first priorities first

David vs. Goliath, Part 2

April 14, 2013 in Inspiration, LART ("Los Al Race Track" property), News you can use, Our Future, Weekend Wisdom

(West Orange County, CA, 4/14/2013) Warning:  This is  primarily a community website, not a “religious” one.   However,  our contributors and our community include many with deep spiritual convictions.  As on of them, I occasionally put up a “Weekend Wisdom” post from my own spiritual perspective.  This is one of them.

If that might offend you, or you’re not interested, just skip this post.  Regardless of your religious convictions, if you live in and care about Cypress, Los Alamitos, Rossmoor, Seal Beach, West Garden Grove or any of the surrounding communities,  you’ll find plenty of interest in this community blog.

As our community prepares to fight tow very monied special interests over the next few months, I put up a couple inspirational posts to prepare us for battle over the last two days.

On Friday, our “Rossmoor Columnist”  told a cautionary tale from his days with the L.A. District Attorney’s office on “David vs. Goliath:  Goliath Wins!”

Yesterday, I took inspiration from, of all people, Kobe Bryant and his response to his season ending injury Friday night in “Kobe’s 3 am Facebook post/rant on dealing with adversity.”

Without criticizing Kobe’s amazing determination, I’d like to add (or at least embellish)  what for me is my most important source of motivation, strength, and wisdom, the spiritual dimension.

Be on the lookout for a possible child molester in a white mini-van

OCSD sketch of driver of silver or grey minivan in attempted child abduction on Lee Elementary Playground on Palm Sunday

(Rossmoor, 4/10/2013) 10 pm update: According to The Patch, authorities have said a man in a silver minivan offered candy to a 7-year-old girl and threatened to kidnap an 8-year-old boy at Lee Elementary School around 12:30 pm today. (remaining updated portions also in italics)

That was the reason all Rossmoor schools were put on lockdown today after a suspicious silver mini-van was spotted by Lee Elementary School.

The van was similar, if not identical, to a gray or silver mini-van with a missing rear window that was involved in an apparent attempted child abduction at Lee Elementary around 11:30 am on Palm Sunday, 3/24/2013.

In that instance, according to the OCSD, two girls were playing in the Lee playground when they were approached by two subjects in such a mini-van. “The driver (see sketch) got out of the minivan, walked to the rear and told the girls to “come here” while motioning his arms towards him.

“The worst place in Orange County for this project?” My EIR letter

April 2, 2013 in 2013 Issues, About Dave Emerson, Cypress, Decency, LART ("Los Al Race Track" property), News you can use, Our Future, Safety, Traffic

(Los Alamitos, 4/2/2012)  Today is the last day for the public and local agencies to submit their Environmental Impact Report concerns for the draft EIR report on the proposed ProLogis trucking/industrial site on the Old Cypress Golf Course’s southern portion.

I wrote mine last night.  I could have kept writing, but ran out of time. . . not concerns.  I live to the southwest of the project.  Those living to the north, northwest, east, and south of the project probably have equal concerns.

The bottom line is, all the communities surrounding the complex are already gridlocked.  The last thing we need is 12 NFL Football fields of interior cubicles filled with office workers, or 250 truck bays with hundreds of trucks large and small arriving 24/7, or any combination of the two.

Read on for my perspective.  Feel free to cut & paste to make it easier for you to get yours e-mailed before today’s deadline, although it’s Read the rest of this entry →

300+ bay Katella truck terminal Council discussion Monday (3/18), Open House Tuesday

March 17, 2013 in City Council Meetings, Cypress, LART ("Los Al Race Track" property), News you can use, Our Future, Planning & Community Development, Safety

(3/17/2013, Los Alamitos)  You may never have heard of Prologis,  but according to their website they are “the leading owner and developer of  industrial real estate . . . . and distribution facilities worldwide.”

They already have a massive distribution facility  in Buena Park on Knott  & Artesia, just south of the 91.   From a Google Maps satellite view it appears to encompass five large buildings, one with their name and logo painted across the roof.

That’s one of  75 facilities they operate in California, and of 411 Prologis properties across the US.

Worldwide Prologis is involved with properties with a total of over 550 million square feet of properties.

They also have facilities in Anaheim, Long Beach, Read the rest of this entry →

HG: Dad’s Book Report

March 7, 2013 in Highlands Guy's Thursday Columns, Local Media review & reporting, News you can use, Perspective

(Los Alamitos, 3/7/2013)  OK, you’ve got to read today’s column from our Highlands’ Guy.

You’ll be glad you did.

I guarantee it!

Breaking news:  The book below has already been so successful that the local author has just inked a contract with the publisher for a trilogy!  Details below.

With kids in college and high school I can relate to book reports. Heck, I can even remember doing a couple in my own school days back when you usually borrowed them from the library.  And this only after finding them via the card index. What a pain that was!

Some of my current reading is spurred by the reviews in the Sunday L A Times. Although I do find that many times the reviews are esoteric and serve only to give a forum to the reviewers.

Anyway, late last year I became aware of a new book with a really local focus. I had seen the author’s name connected with all kinds of local happenings and events. I missed the sale and signing at Read the rest of this entry →
