(5/18/09, Los Alamitos, by Dave Emerson)  If you want to catch a glimpse of two of Los Alamitos’ civic treasures,  set your DVR to record John Underwood’s Backstory on Los Al TV 3 this week.

This week’s show features one of the more amazing people you’ll ever meet:  A 78 year old musician who’s still teaching in a middle school!  (To give some perspective, Read more

(Los Alamitos, 5/21/09, by Larry Strawther)   What would you like to see on LATV?  More city government meetings? More local arts?  More high school concerts and plays?  More sports?  Less sports?  Maybe you’d just like the whole thing to go away.  Whatever the case, we’re providing you a forum to make your voice heard with our LATV survey.

Some of us think LATV, if managed properly, can be a very valuable tool in this community — not just for coverage of local events (sports AND non-sports), but for education (advanced training at Los Al HS in audio-video, the third largest industry in this country), and also for helping local business in a way that could definitely have a positive financial impact for this city and community.

Obviously, I have my thoughts on what the people in this community would like to see on LATV, and so do others.   But the facts are none of us truly know what the community wants, so why not actually ask them?

If you’d like to make your opinions known, go here to take our survey:

The 5 p.m. special meeting will start with an opportunity for oral communications from the public, then move into yet another closed session on the appointment of a City Manager, after which the Council will move back into Read more

Breaking news: Today’s 5 p.m. workshop is to be televised live, then rebroadcast during the week. Thanks to “LATV” for the head’s up! Tune in, then report and comment on what you saw right here.

City owned or non-profit?

A new non-profit: "blue sky" or the best option?

(by Dave Emerson) As I mentioned previously, Tuesday afternoon, 2/17, at 5 p.m. the Los Alamitos City Council will hold a special “workshop” meeting to discuss options for LosAl TV.  (Click here for agenda & 16 pages of history, options, and earlier staff reports.)

Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend, and I don’t believe the workshop will be televised, although it might be.  If any reader(s) would like to try your hand at reporting, I’d encourage you to attend & use the comment section below to report back on your observations.

Personally, I think setting LosAl TV up as an independent non-profit funded purely from franchise fees, donations, and possibly a small fee from the city makes a lot of sense.  There are legitimate concerns that need to be addressed, including: Read more

(by Dave Emerson)  This coming Tuesday at 5 p.m. the Los Alamitos City Council will hold a special “workshop” session to discuss options for Los Al TV.

There’s been controversy surrounding Los Al TV in the past, but I believe it might be a good time for a fresh start.  In any case, broad community input would be helpful.  If you’re interested, you might want to show up and share your thoughts at the public comment time at the start of the 5:00 meeting.

Four possible options are presented in a staff report prepared by interim City Manager Nita McKay.  The intent appears to be that after discussion the Council will direct the staff as to which option to pursue, although it is quite possible that other options will also be raised and considered.

In 2007 the non profit Los Alamitos Television Corporation was dissolved and the city took over operation.  The options presented in the staff report are:

  1. Continue the status quo, with the city operating Los Al TV, either through a contract with an outside company or with a part time city employee. Read more
