Filed Under City Council Meetings, LosAl TV, Parks and Recreation | 1 Comment
(7/16/2011, Los Alamitos) Monday’s 7 p.m. regular Council meeting has a heavy and interesting agenda including a new Coyote Creek Park, Los Al Blvd. revitalization, & modifications to Lexington at Katella. I hope to get a post up on that later in the weekend, but we’ll start with the Council’s 5 p.m. Special Meeting.
The meeting is to interview and consider applicants to fill openings on two of the City’s Commissions: five openings (4 adult positions; 1 student position) on the Cable Commission; three on the Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Commission.
The applicants in the order they will be interviewed, are as follows:
Cable Commission:
- Alice Jempsa (former Council Member & Mayor)
- Althea Miller (long time cable contributor, “Traveling with Althea”) Read more

Your reporting & comments on Tuesday’s 2 City Council meetings & Wednesday’s News Enterprise
Filed Under 2011 Issues, City Council Meetings, Los Al Medical Center, LosAl TV | 13 Comments
Late night update: This weeks 2 Tuesday Council meetings are followed Wednesday morning by the week’s local paper, and by a rebroadcast of both meetings beginning at noon Wednesday. So we’re combining our 2 “your reporting & comments” posts this week into one. Whether you want to comment or report on the Council meetings or the paper, this is the place!
(2/22/11, Los Alamitos) The first meeting, from about 5 – 6 or 6:30 tonight, focused on the budget (agenda here, scroll down for detailed reports). (both meetings are rebroadcast Wed 2/23/11 at noon, Saturday at 7 p.m.)
The 7 p.m. meeting has a varied agenda, including the required second reading and vote on the Medical Center expansion, discussion of related issues as to who owns Kaylor (click here for details in “Former P.C. Chair sees big liability issues at stake tonight), an extension of LATV3 contracts with both John Underwood and Larry Strawther’s Community Schools Media Partnership, and discussion of the “Poe rule” limiting public comments (see“Mayor Poe’s public comment policy”)
For the 7 p.m. agenda, and links to all staff reports, click here.
LATV rebroadcast schedule
First rebroadcast tomorrow, Wednesday at noon, second on Saturday at 7 a.m. The 5 p.m. meeting will air fist, followed (briefly, we hope) by the 7 p.m. meeting. Rebroadcast schedule is by day of the week–if this were a Monday meeting there would be a rebroadcast on Tuesday at 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., so for Tuesday meetings there are two fewer rebroadcasts.
Once again, this is where the public reports, so give a brief summary of what Read more

(2/9/11, Los Alamitos) Los Al TV is interested in finding out what you watch and would like to watch on Los Al TV. So they have put together a simple 11-question online survey for community residents.
The survey is online at http://losaltvonline.com/blog. Please note, we’ve updated this link, & it should work fine now.
The survey is not only aimed at viewers in Los Alamitos or Rossmoor – but outside areas as well since the station is now seen on both Read more

Once again our regular Thursday columnist strikes out in a whole new direction with some excellent thoughts on a very relevant topic.
Please not that the intent is not to criticize LATV. As the author wrote in his e-mail accompanying the column, “I know it’s all volunteer, and the guys doing it are doing a good job…as far as they go. But there is much potential left on the table.”
Read on and you may be surprised and impressed:
(12/2/2010, Los Alamitos) by “Highlands Guy”
PEG (Public, Educational, Government) television channels, known by the more common name public access channels, have been around since the 1970’s, under the auspices of the Federal Communications Commission.
It’s a really good idea that has, in many instances, not reached its potential. I think the moniker ‘public access’ sets up a thinking process where folks don’t expect too much. And, at times, that’s what they get. I applaud the job done by our local stars that have entertained and educated us for a long time at LATV.
But I must also note that I think there are opportunities that are not being fulfilled. There is no reason that the programming cannot be a bit more exciting, more dynamic, with higher quality lighting, sound, and a more even flow of the action.
The people, and the events that take place in and around Los Al are varied and exciting on many levels. But, currently it is just not Read more

Council meets at Museum tonight, 8/16/10, TV delayed & streamed live
Filed Under City Council Meetings, LosAl TV | Leave a Comment
(8/16/20) If you’re planning to head to tonight’s Los Al City Council meeting at 7:00, be sure you go to the City’s Museum just south of the Chase Bank at Los Al Blvd. and Katella, because that’s where the meeting will be held, beginning at 7 p.m.
This link should take you to the meeting streaming live online starting at 7 tonight:
http://www.localsports.biz/LATV/player2.html\
If it doesn’t work, instructions should also be running on Los Al TV3 at 7.
Or you can catch the rebroadcast (see below)
The good news is that when they get their new server they’ll be able to host up to 200 hours of video on demand. Hopefully that will include links from Council agenda items to that part of the meeting so anybody can go directly to what interests them most. And you won’t have to have cable or FIOS to get it!
Sounds good to me!
If you want to watch it on TV, you’ll need to do it online or stay up late, when it’s rebroadcast after the crew gets back to the station. It’ll also be rebroadcast Tuesday at 7 a.m. and 8 p.m., Wednesday at Read more

Your input needed for LATV
Filed Under 2009 Issues, LosAl TV | 1 Comment

(Los Alamitos, 5/21/09, by Larry Strawther) What would you like to see on LATV? More city government meetings? More local arts? More high school concerts and plays? More sports? Less sports? Maybe you’d just like the whole thing to go away. Whatever the case, we’re providing you a forum to make your voice heard with our LATV survey.
Some of us think LATV, if managed properly, can be a very valuable tool in this community — not just for coverage of local events (sports AND non-sports), but for education (advanced training at Los Al HS in audio-video, the third largest industry in this country), and also for helping local business in a way that could definitely have a positive financial impact for this city and community.
Obviously, I have my thoughts on what the people in this community would like to see on LATV, and so do others. But the facts are none of us truly know what the community wants, so why not actually ask them?
If you’d like to make your opinions known, go here to take our survey:

A new non-profit: "blue sky" or the best option?
(by Dave Emerson) As I mentioned previously, Tuesday afternoon, 2/17, at 5 p.m. the Los Alamitos City Council will hold a special “workshop” meeting to discuss options for LosAl TV. (Click here for agenda & 16 pages of history, options, and earlier staff reports.)
Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend, and I don’t believe the workshop will be televised, although it might be. If any reader(s) would like to try your hand at reporting, I’d encourage you to attend & use the comment section below to report back on your observations.
Personally, I think setting LosAl TV up as an independent non-profit funded purely from franchise fees, donations, and possibly a small fee from the city makes a lot of sense. There are legitimate concerns that need to be addressed, including: Read more

Special Council workshop on Los Al TV Tuesday, 2/17
Filed Under City Council Meetings, LosAl TV | 2 Comments
(by Dave Emerson) This coming Tuesday at 5 p.m. the Los Alamitos City Council will hold a special “workshop” session to discuss options for Los Al TV.
There’s been controversy surrounding Los Al TV in the past, but I believe it might be a good time for a fresh start. In any case, broad community input would be helpful. If you’re interested, you might want to show up and share your thoughts at the public comment time at the start of the 5:00 meeting.
Four possible options are presented in a staff report prepared by interim City Manager Nita McKay. The intent appears to be that after discussion the Council will direct the staff as to which option to pursue, although it is quite possible that other options will also be raised and considered.
In 2007 the non profit Los Alamitos Television Corporation was dissolved and the city took over operation. The options presented in the staff report are:
- Continue the status quo, with the city operating Los Al TV, either through a contract with an outside company or with a part time city employee. Read more
