N-E reveals conflict between LAUSD and youth sports over field fee increase

May 15, 2013 in 2013 Issues, City Budget, Local Media review & reporting, Parks and Recreation, Schools, Your reporting and comments

(5/15/2013, Los Alamitos) (Weekly Wednesday local media reporting & comments post)  Three things caught my attention in today’s News Enterprise, and two of them related to a controversy that’s been brewing for several weeks, when our School Board announced their intent to dramatically raise the field use fees charged to local youth sports groups such as AYSO and Friday Night Lights.

The District’s Athletic Fields have deteriorated badly, and the district is dramatically raising use fees to finance renovation and upkeep to avoid deterioration this time around.  The groups that use the fields haven’t had their fees raised for ten years, according to super-volunteer  Pete Carvajal, who wrote an excellent Guest Column on the subject that appears on page 4 of today’s N-E.  Pete’s headed up volunteer proprams for both Rossmoor School, AYSO, and also chaired Los Al’s Parks & Rec Commission, so he probably has as balanced a perspective as anyone on this.  As usual, Pete is both  Read the rest of this entry →

Breaking News from the Citizens for Responsible Development.  Details to follow in a separate post, or in your comments below.(Los Alamitos/Cypress, 5/8/2013) Lots of local news for you to report and comment on again this week, much focused on Cypress’ double barreled issues,  Proposition A and the ProLogis Development, the result of last year’s Proposition L.

The photo on the left is one of several lakes on the “back 9″ of the old Golf Course, the area Proposition A wants to rezone from “Public/Semi Public” use to allow residential and local retail.  Proposition A also includes another ten acre parcel north and west of Costco which would be zoned for light industsrial, although the owner has offered some supposedly binding changes.

I’d still like to see it stay the way it is.

I’m off to a Traffic Commission tonight, so at this point I’ll let you report and respond to whatever you found of interest today or recently in any media relating to our town.

Your 5/1/13 weekly media report: Prologis everywhere!

May 1, 2013 in LART ("Los Al Race Track" property), Local Media review & reporting, Your reporting and comments

schoolinlosal(5/1/2013, Los Alamitos) This weekly post is for you to comment and/or report on media items of  interest to West Orange County residents.

This morning, before I’d even gotten beyond the Register’s  Sports Section (DUCKS BEAT REDWINGS!!!!) or seen the News Enterprise I received the following e-mail from a dedicated Cypress community activist:

Hi everyone,

I get the OC Register every day and have access to the online version and, good news, both versions have the latest ProLogis trucking story.  The hard copy is even better with a map of the area, etc.  The story is on Page 1 of the Local section of the OC Register, continues front & center on page 3.
This story does a really good job of telling our concerns about the project – so even though the title of the article may be about “developers cutting projects’ scope”, the article itself is great in that it talks a lot about the negative impact the facility would have on local school children….. the school district officials are speaking out now, in part, I think, Read the rest of this entry →

Your weekly media comments & reports post, 4/24-30, 2013

April 24, 2013 in 2013 Issues, Local Media review & reporting, Your reporting and comments

(4/17/2013, Los Alamitos)  It’s Wednesday, time once again for our weekly post that lets YOU let the world know what you’ve seen or heard of interest & what YOU think about it!

Once again we start with the only print weekly delivered to every home and business in Los Alamitos, our own News Enterprise.

The good news, at least where I live, is that the N-E seems to be arriving earlier every week, but I’m actually preparing this early, so I haven’t seen it yet!

I’m guessing our OC Breeze will arrive today as well, and I’m interested in how  Read the rest of this entry →

There they go again! Your local media reporting post, 4/17-23

April 17, 2013 in 2013 Issues, Local Media review & reporting, Your reporting and comments

N E front page march 6(Los Alamitos, 4/17/2013)  I haven’t seen today’s News Enterprise yet, but I’m hoping it will include the following letter from your humble blogger.

If it doesn’t, it’s not Editor Ted’s fault, since I was a little tardy sending it in.

Regardless, it expresses an urgent concern for those of us who don’t want a second logistics facility build to the north of the one we’re already fighting.

Read it & act.

Los Al Traffic Commission focuses on ProLogis Trucks tonight, as does our local media

April 10, 2013 in 2013 Issues, Commissions, Cypress, LART ("Los Al Race Track" property), Local Media review & reporting, Traffic, Your reporting and comments

bigrigpollute(4/10/2013, Los Alamitos)  Please note today is the  deadline for you to e-mail your concerns about Cypress  giant”Logistics” campus.  Click here for details.   The Traffic Commission meets tonight at City Hall to review a staff report on Cypress’ proposed 33 acre ProLogis logistics complex.  This is the first time the project has come before the Commission, and provides local residents an opportunity to express their concerns to the Commissioners.

Which is what Cypress area residents seem to be doing increasingly, judging by our local media!

Today’s News-Enterprise had a veritable logistics Grand Slam (which is more than you can say for the high-priced Angels sluggers so far):

  • Front page above-the-fold:  ”Public forum doesn’t quell fear.”
  • Guest Column from Cypress resident George Pardon, “Residents shouldn’t be Read the rest of this entry →

Armed robbery at Starbucks, Changes at the N-E: Your weekly media reporting post

March 27, 2013 in Crime and police, Local Media review & reporting, Safety, Your reporting and comments

(Los Alamitos, 3/27/2013) I’m going to miss print newspapers when they’re gone.

But that doesn’t change the fact that they are dinosaurs facing extinction.  Major dailies across the land have cut back to only 3 or 4 days a week.  Tribune Corp,  parent of the Chicago Tribune  and owner of the L.A. Times and KTLA 5 is selling off it’s print media so it can concentrate on broadcast.

Several months ago the Community Media Group reported to their editors and publishers that income was declining while expenses continued to increase.  Bottom line:   Read the rest of this entry →

Prologis’ trucks jam local media

March 20, 2013 in 2013 Issues, City Council, LART ("Los Al Race Track" property), Local Media review & reporting, Our Future, Safety, Traffic, Your reporting and comments

(Los Alamitos, 3/20/2013)  Lots going on in the local Media this week!

Prologos hasn’t even broken ground (or got necessary approvals) for their  ”industrial facility” but news about their trucks is already jamming the local media.

Yup,  there’s been a lot of buzz about Prologis to place a bit of a pig in the poke in Cypress right across the street from one of Los Alamitos’ single family neighborhoods.

Once people started expressing concerns the two Prologis VPs at yesterday’s “Open House”  took the approach of “we don’t know who will lease it, but we aim for Read the rest of this entry →

More good news. . . your weekly media post

March 13, 2013 in Local Media review & reporting, Your reporting and comments

breeze & N-E on driveway(Los Alamitos, 3/13/2013)  It’s Wednesday, so it’s time once again for our weekly post where you get to report and comment on any item of local interest in any media.

This tradition began several years ago, when LetsFixLosAl was pretty much the only online local media.

Back then our weekly media post was designed as a means for Los Al area residents to respond in real-time to items of interest, especially in our weekly newspapers.

Today our Wednesday media column also serves as a place for you to Read the rest of this entry →

HG: Dad’s Book Report

March 7, 2013 in Highlands Guy's Thursday Columns, Local Media review & reporting, News you can use, Perspective

(Los Alamitos, 3/7/2013)  OK, you’ve got to read today’s column from our Highlands’ Guy.

You’ll be glad you did.

I guarantee it!

Breaking news:  The book below has already been so successful that the local author has just inked a contract with the publisher for a trilogy!  Details below.

With kids in college and high school I can relate to book reports. Heck, I can even remember doing a couple in my own school days back when you usually borrowed them from the library.  And this only after finding them via the card index. What a pain that was!

Some of my current reading is spurred by the reviews in the Sunday L A Times. Although I do find that many times the reviews are esoteric and serve only to give a forum to the reviewers.

Anyway, late last year I became aware of a new book with a really local focus. I had seen the author’s name connected with all kinds of local happenings and events. I missed the sale and signing at Read the rest of this entry →
