(1/20/2012, Los Alamitos) Why did it take a Hollywood legend like George Lucas 24 years to make and market his movie about America’s Tuskegee Airmen?

Lucas said part of the problem was America’s studios reluctance to bet on a film where all the good guys are African American and all the bad guys are white.

Sadly, another part was our studio’s reluctance to produce something besides a “music video Read more

(10/27/2011, Los Alamitos)  In a post this afternoon on the Register’s OC political blog, Politics Reporter Martin Wisckol noted that Long Beach Councilman Gary DeLong has raised an impressive $256,000, putting him on the National Republican Congressinoal Committee’s “On the Radar” list.

Wisckol had this to say about Troy Edgar’s chances:

It remains to be seen whether little-known businessman Troy Edgar will spend the $205,000 he’s loaned his campaign. He ranks at the bottom in terms of raising money from others, with $21,000.

But there’s a conceivable path to victory for Edgar if Read more

(8/31/2011, Los Alamitos) It’s Wednesday, which means it’s time for our weekly post where you can report and comment on items of interest you come across in any of our local media.

This week  seems like a good one to focus on our ever increasing online media, since I once again couldn’t find very much news in today’s edition of the paper formerly known as the News Enterprise.

So I flipped over to our newest online news source,  former News Enterprise editor Shelley Henderson’s Orange County Breeze , and found an attractive home page with lots of content, including a fair amount of reporting by Shelley as well as even more “Courtesy” content from local press releases.

I was surprised to also find a “Guest Editorial” by former Los Alamitos Mayor Dean Grose,  ”California headed for

This is the image e-mailed to her friends by Orange County Republican committeewoman and Tea Party activist Marilyn Davenport(4/17/2010, Los Alamitos, updated 4/18) by J.M. Ivler (updates by Dave Emerson) In general I wouldn’t post this as it has more to do with Fullerton than Los Alamitos, but on the positive side it appears that Mr. Grose is no longer alone in Orange County politics for “not getting it.”

The Weekly has obtained a copy of an email sent to fellow conservatives this week by Marilyn Davenport, a Southern California Tea Party activist and member of the central committee of the Orange County Republican Party.

Under the words, “Now you know why no birth certificate,” there’s an Obama family portrait showing them as apes.

(Los Alamitos, 10/26/2010)Turns out, the infamous e-mail from Mayor Dean Grose showing a watermelon field replacing the White House lawn shortly after the election of our first African-American President wasn’t Dean’s only tasteless e-mail.

Grose also sent a sexually explicit e-mail to at least one female city employee.

As well as one slamming “Mexicans.”

Then there’s the one asking Los Alamitos’ Director of Parks and Recreation to rescind her award nomination for the volunteer efforts of the African American businesswoman Grose forwarded that watermelon e-mail to!

Resigned former Mayor Grose and the photo from his e-mail that made Los Al a laughingstock

10/12 update:  To see what other blogs are saying bout Mr. Briggeman’s latest escapade, check out Kevin Ferguson’s Taking out the trash in Los Alamitos?

(Los Alamitos, 10/11/10)  Well, it looks like “Team Briggeman” was working overtime if not ethically over the weekend.

In case you forgot during Los Alamitos’ last City Council election, there were numerous incidents of  signs and flyers for Ken Parker and myself mysteriously disappearing.

Near the end of that election, local volunteers reported a strange confrontation passing out election flyers:  They were surprised to see George Briggeman drive up in his Cadillac Escalade.

They apparently were even more surprised when Dean Grose and Briggeman jumped out of the car and told them to stop passing out the flyers.  When the volunteers declined to stop, the “Dynamic Duo” started taking pictures of them.   Talk about intimidation.

Fast forward 2 years:

Now it’s signs and flyers for “Team Truth” (Kusumoto, Sheridan, & Graham-Mejia) that are disappearing.

One property owner decided to mount a surveillance camera to see who’d been taking them.  You’ll never guess who it was.

The video’s only 9 seconds, but well worth watching.  To see it on You Tube, click here.

Yup, that’s Mr. George Briggeman taking down a Kusumoto-Sheridan-Mejia campaign sign on someone else’s property.

But wait. . . there’s more! Read more

(9/30/10, Los Alamitos)  Dave here.  Once again an individual comment seems worthy of it’s own post.  This time it’s from our former City Council Member (& one of my all-time favorites), Catherine Driscoll, and was originally posted  as a comment under “Edgar & Zarkos:  Leading with Tresspassing & Plaigerism?”:

There is no trust, truth or transparency with either Zarkos, Edgar of Dean Grose. I was just reading the latest article in the OC Register about Dean.

After numerous records requests I saw several racist emails that he sent to not only City employees but to Read more

(9/21/2010, Los Alamitos) In a column titled “O.C. GOP endorses man behind racist e-mail,” which I believe will run in Wednesday’s OC Register, the Local Section’s page 1 columnist reports on the Orange County Republican Party’s Central Committee’s endorsement of Dean Grose for Los Alamitos City Council.

Mickadeit made his opinion clear in the article’s  first paragraph:  “First, Los Alamitos Mayor Dean Grose e-mailed the infamous White House watermelon patch cartoon to a black woman. Then he sent her an apology that might have been more offensive the cartoon itself.  Then, after resigning under intense public pressure, he decided, only a year after Read more

"No Easter egg hunt this year" was the text with this photo that Grose e-mailed to local leaders and supporters

(Los Alamitos, 9/4/2010) In that slick flyer our new all Los Al voters got last weekend our new BFF, Charles Sylvia,  told us to “Stay Tuned”  because “we are carefully reviewing the candidates.”  “Soon,” he promised, “you’ll be hearing our recommendations. . . .”

We already know Sylvia & his backers love four of the incumbents, giving all but Gerri Graham-Mejia an “A+,”  but only two of their foursome are up for election, and there are three seats to fill.  Based on Gerri Graham-Mejia’s “F” grade on Sylvia’s scoreboard, it appears they still need another candidate.  (For LosAlTruth.com’s candidate scoreboard, which came out a bit differently, click here and then scroll down just a tad and click “Scorecard” on the left.)

I think Warren Kusumoto is a practical, conservative resident who doesn’t like to waste money (witness his opposition to the costly trash contract),  and who has served on the Traffic Commission without being kicked Read more

(8/20/2010, Los Alamitos, CA) As I’ve said, all candidates have the option of submitting a ballot statement when they file to run for City Council.

I’m posting all the candidates’ statements to give the candidates a voice and allow you, the public, to respond (diplomatically, I hope).

Three candidates e-mailed me their statements, which have been posted and are linked below. I’m posting each statement separately to Read more

(Los Alamitos, 6/9/2010) Former Los Alamitos Mayor Dean Grose appeared to continue somewhat of a political comeback yesterday, coming in 5th out of 12 candidates for the Republican Party’s County Central Committee for the 67th Assembly District.  (Seats went to the top six candidates, see official results in table below.)

(March 25, 2009, by Dave Emerson)  I tend to prefer more hard news than we get from the News Enterprise, the only local paper that serves all of Los Alamitos.   I suppose that’s a matter of personal choice:  Some readers probably want even more “soft” news.  N-E Editor Brian Smith and I both know it’s impossible to please everyone.

Today, however, I think an our ever congenial Brian has an “attaboy” coming his way.  Primarily because of the amount of space he devoted to “Letters to the Editor” today.  Not only did he print Read more
