Retired, looking for my niche

April 26, 2013 in Crime and police, David Lara, shooting from the hip"

Today, we learn more about our newest columnist and the co-leader of the Rossmoor Predator Management Team, Dave Lara.

(Rossmoor, 4/26/2013, by Dave Lara):  It was the Friday of my first week as an investigator with the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office. A deputy district attorney walked into our office and said “I need help.”

He told my partner and I that he was in a jury trial where the suspect was charged with burglary and assaulting the victim as she walked into the door of her residence. However, “unfortunately, there was no one to identify the suspect.  ”   The D.A.  felt that the suspect would not be convicted.  The suspect had a long record of violent crimes against both women and police officers.

I did not tell him this was our first week but this sounded Read the rest of this entry →

Be on the lookout for a possible child molester in a white mini-van

OCSD sketch of driver of silver or grey minivan in attempted child abduction on Lee Elementary Playground on Palm Sunday

(Rossmoor, 4/10/2013) 10 pm update: According to The Patch, authorities have said a man in a silver minivan offered candy to a 7-year-old girl and threatened to kidnap an 8-year-old boy at Lee Elementary School around 12:30 pm today. (remaining updated portions also in italics)

That was the reason all Rossmoor schools were put on lockdown today after a suspicious silver mini-van was spotted by Lee Elementary School.

The van was similar, if not identical, to a gray or silver mini-van with a missing rear window that was involved in an apparent attempted child abduction at Lee Elementary around 11:30 am on Palm Sunday, 3/24/2013.

In that instance, according to the OCSD, two girls were playing in the Lee playground when they were approached by two subjects in such a mini-van. “The driver (see sketch) got out of the minivan, walked to the rear and told the girls to “come here” while motioning his arms towards him.

Armed robbery at Starbucks, Changes at the N-E: Your weekly media reporting post

March 27, 2013 in Crime and police, Local Media review & reporting, Safety, Your reporting and comments

(Los Alamitos, 3/27/2013) I’m going to miss print newspapers when they’re gone.

But that doesn’t change the fact that they are dinosaurs facing extinction.  Major dailies across the land have cut back to only 3 or 4 days a week.  Tribune Corp,  parent of the Chicago Tribune  and owner of the L.A. Times and KTLA 5 is selling off it’s print media so it can concentrate on broadcast.

Several months ago the Community Media Group reported to their editors and publishers that income was declining while expenses continued to increase.  Bottom line:   Read the rest of this entry →

Is Rossmoor paying it’s fair share?

March 13, 2013 in City Budget, Crime and police, Decency, Rossmoor, Safety, Schools

(Los Alamitos, 3/13/2013)  Rossmoor resident Dave Lara’s Sunday post, “Rossmoor, Open Your Wallet,”  has generated some interesting comments and one very interesting proposal.

I think Dave Lara is to be commended for admitting that , when it comes to the new Officer on the High School campus, he and his Rossmoor neighbors are not paying their fair share (more on that below).

Here’s the bigger issue:  Is, that officer’s cost just the tip of the iceberg?

I’m not sure any of us really know.

I’d like to see an actual Read the rest of this entry →

Acid-bomb victim leaves Rossmoor!

February 20, 2013 in Crime and police, Decency, Rossmoor, Safety

(Rossmoor, 2/20/2013)  Judging from the letter reprinted below, apparently it was a hate crime, whether the OC Sherriffs thought so or not!

Sadly, the head of the African-American family that was targeted by Acid Bombs early in December has decided to leave Rossmoor.   (For details see our report, “Rossmoor acid bomb attack may be hate crime.”

The letter was originally sent to our Rossmoor “Shooting from the Hip” Columnists, Dave & Rebecca Lara, and was included in their Rossmoor Predator Management Team‘s weekly e-mail yesterday.

Read it and weep [bold italics added]: Read the rest of this entry →

Tactical alert this morning

(2/7/2013, Los Alamitos) Los Al police are on tactical alert for Christopher Jordan Dorner, a 33 year old  former Los Angeles police officer who is alleged to have killed three people in the past seven days, apparently in revenge for his firing from the Los Angeles Police in 2009.

Dorner, who’s last known residence was with his mother in La Palma, owns a 2005 Nissan Titan like the one pictured above, either gray or blue.   He is reported to be well armed and extremely dangerous.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! (Or, Rossmoor booz, lies, & videotape)

January 21, 2013 in Crime and police, David Lara, shooting from the hip", Humor, Rossmoor

(Rossmoor, 1/21/2013)  Dave E. here. Maybe Rossmoor & Los Alamitos have more in common than we think!

I just got done reading the latest column from Dave & Rebecca Lara.  My lovely wife finally came in from the living room to see why I was laughing so much.  I think we’re all going to love our newest contributors!

FED EX, TEENAGERS, BEER & ROSES is an unusual combination but let us explain.

Due to the burglaries in the Los Alamitos-Rossmoor areas, our family decided to upgrade our security system. We added six high-definition cameras which also capture sound. The information is stored for 30 days and can be retrieved by use of a personal computer or cell phone.

FED EX:

One day on our front door was a Fed Ex note stating that a package that we were to receive was now at their office for pick up. They had made three attempts to deliver the item our home. In calling and speaking to a manager, he provided us the date and time of the three attempted deliveries.

We stated that we were not home for one of the days but were home for the other two days. He replied “sometimes older people are home but they don’t hear the door bell or are taking a nap.” Read the rest of this entry →

January 15, 2013 in Crime and police, David Lara, shooting from the hip", Decency

I’ve been posting info from them for years, and excited about having them as regular authors.  Coyotes and criminals, & Read the rest of this entry →

HG: My Perspective on our town, Los Alamitos

January 10, 2013 in 2013 Issues, City Budget, Crime and police, Highlands Guy's Thursday Columns

(Los Alamitos, 1/10/2013 by Highlands Guy) Current estimates by the US Census Bureau put the population of the world at about 7 billion humans. They say in the good old United States we have close to 312 million fellow Americans.

Let’s narrow things down a bit, with our friends and neighbors in the Golden State at around 37.7 million. Down one more notch to Orange County, containing 3 million folks. And, you guessed it, at the bottom, or top, of it all is Los Al with about 11 and a half thousand gentle souls.

If my numbers are right this puts us at 0.00002% of the population of the Earth.

More numbers to think about. The FY2012/13 Los Al budget is $16,593,296.00. The budget for the country of Nauru is $13,500,00.00, and for the Pitcairn Islands is $1.028m.

An old study put the global average annual income at $7,000.00. India is in at $3,627.00, and Russia at a whopping, $21,245.00. Compare this with 45% of your neighbors bringing in $75,000.00 or more. And just for a bit more point of reference, the stats show at least 45% of us have Read the rest of this entry →
