(Los Alamitos  2/4/2012)  Apparently the workers on the 605 Freeway carpool connectors project removed grates that help keep out the coyotes, resulting in increased coyote sightings this past week, including one on Los Alamitos Blvd near the High School:

(Los Alamitos, 1/25/2012)   It’s Wednesday, which means it’s time for our weekly post where you can report and comment on items of interest you come across in any of our local media.

Today’s News Enterprise’s front page story on the Council’s actions regarding Council Member Kusumoto’s alleged Brown Act Violations gave a detailed, balanced explanation that  I thought showed a good grasp of the issues by Editor/reporter Apodaca.  What do you think?

I was also impressed by Apodaca’s Read more

(Los Alamitos, 1/20/2012, adapted from Los Al P.D.)  If you were near Bloomfield just north of Katella or Sausalito (aka Briggeman) west of Los Al Blvd. between 2:45 and 3:05 yesterday afternoon, you may have some information that could help solve three robberies.

Last night at 10:28 p.m. Los Alamitos Unified School District Superintendent Sherry Kropp broadcast an e-mail to most Los Alamitos U.S.D. parents with the surprising news that ”there were three strong-armed robberies this afternoon” of four  students on their way walking home from our High School.

Additional details, from the Los Alamitos Police Read more

(1/11/2012, Los Alamitos) It’s Wednesday, which means it’s time for our weekly post where you can report and comment on items of interest you come across in any of our local media.

Today’s News Enterprise continued the encouraging trend to more solid local news and sports, including:

  • Seal Beach’s  explanation of the  timing of the construction on Seal Beach Blvd. (it needs to be completed prior to the opening of the new bridge over the 405) and the rationale for the second left turn lane into Rossmoor at St. Cloud Drive.  Made sense to me, I just think they needed to add additional  left turn lanes into the “Shops at Rossmoor [in Seal Beach],”  especially with Read more

(Los Alamitos, 12/20/2011)  Only 2 more Thursdays this year for  Los Alamitos “Picnic at the Plaza”, but this week’s the last event because our trucks are taking the last Thursday of the year off.

Yup, the trucks are taking  the 29th off, but you’ll have a choice of 9 trucks both this week.

(12/14/2011, Los Alamitos)  Time once again for you to tell the world what you think is imnportant in our local media, along with your commentary.

I gained a new respect for our News Enterprise Publisher Lon Wahlberg from the Sports news item on his 4:25:44 personal marathon record achieved last Sunday in the Honolulu marathon.

That’s a good two hours better than my personal marathon best. . . achieved in the last millenia (L.A., 1999).   (Yeah, that’s pretty slow, but I finished ahead of about 10,000 competitors. . .  and behind 20,000.)

I would have flown out to devote a week or two to onsite coverage in Hawaii had I only known!

Since I wasn’t in Hawaii, you’ll have to be content with the above photo of Wahlberg clicking his stopwatch as he finished the Read more

(12/8/2011, Los Alamitos)  By Highlands Guy: This week I’m taking leeway and editorial looseness with an approach to a chat about our city. And I will state up-front that the format is one in which I am comfortable as well as one I have greatly enjoyed over the years at the end of 60 Minutes.

Also, I find that as I get older, I seem to be falling more and more into the mode of Andy Rooney in my perspective on all sorts of things. And, according to my wife, like Andy, I’m getting a bit grumpier as the years pass.

To those who would say these are non-issues, that’s fine. I can see your perspective and I do realize that there are some really important concerns that our city needs to address. But I would put forth that the little things need to be looked at as well. And actually, there is Read more

2011 update: Much has changed since I wrote this post 2 years ago, but the Youth Center’s Tree Lot is still my favorite place to buy a tree.

You get a great tree with no hassles,  from friendly, helpful local volunteers at a good price and the proceeds go to a great cause right here in town!

(Los Alamitos, originally published 12/18/2009)  There are plenty of places around where you can purchase a Christmas tree.  Over the years, Barb and I have discovered that the freshest, best trees at a very convenient location and for an excellent price.  But that’s not the best part!

When we buy a tree at our favorite local tree lot, all of the profits go to local youth and local schools.  You even get to designate the school!

Of course, I’m Read more
