A New City Commission
Filed Under 2012 Issues, Commission Meetings, Highlands Guy's Thursday column | Leave a Comment
(Los Alamitos, 1/12/2012) Perhaps it’s indicative of the importance of the topic that our Highland Guy’s column this week picks up where our last post left off.
Oce again our Thursday columnist comes up with an innovative possible solution to a current challenge!
by Highlands Guy: The current list of Los Alamitos City Commissions seems to cover most of the areas that would require some level of citizen input and oversight.
We can have a say on how stuff gets done, from keeping the parks open and safe, to trying to get the traffic through or around our city efficiently, to planning for future development, and making sure tax money is spent properly. Important subjects to be sure.
But there is an area that I think just might be more important than any of those noted above. If we are not safe and secure in our homes then everything else just doesn’t matter all that much. Thus I would propose Read more

(7/25/2011, Los Alamitos/Rossmoor) We’ve got family visiting for a couple weeks starting tomorrow, which provides the perfect opportunity for some budding journalists, bloggers or community activists to try their hand at writing with no commitment, while helping inform the Los Alamitos/Rossmoor community.
No experience required–just a desire to get facts & get them out.
No need to learn how to use WordPress, although it’s amazingly easy. You can just e-mail it to me, & I’ll put it up. Even edit it for grammar & spelling, or add pictures, if you don’t have any you want to use.
Any length. . . or just a series of photos. Any topic, as long as it would interest some members of our community.
Great for aspiring young journalists, or those with degrees looking to build their resume. Or anyone with a passion for anything that’s relatively Read more

Dave here. Our Commissions may be the most under-rated component of our City government–and the real key to “fixing Los Al!”
In this excellent post, our “Highlands Guy” shares some insights that never occurred to me, as well as keys to good Commissions and good Commissioners. Kudos to “Highlands Guy” for another great Thursday column!
(Los Alamitos, 7/21/2011)by “Highlands Guy:” The good folks who take time out of their busy lives to devote to the rest of us are important.
These are not elected offices where they get the plaudits, the perks or their pictures on the front page of the News Enterprise. These are our neighbors who spend a bit of time away from their families and responsibilities because they care.
Even more importantly, they are Read more

(LosAlamitos, 5/9/11) Opposition to switching land on the eastern side of Coyote Creek and San Gabriel River from Los Angeles County to Orange County is coming from some surprising quarters.
You’d think the City of Long Beach would be happy to get rid of the narrow 36 acre sliver of vacant and nursery land south of Katella between the Creek/River channels and the 605 freeway, but you’d be wrong. Long Beach claims to want to keep that narrow, inaccessible sliver, claiming it could provide “future open space opportunities for Long Beach residents.”
Also surprising is that due to the possible reassessment of their lots, the six affected Los Alamitos homeowners in College Park North are Read more

Council’s Monday agendas include public comment policy, new lawsuit, but not Kaylor

mid day Monday update: Only the 7 p.m. meeting will be on Los Al TV, but a post will go up later today for your reporting and comments on both meetings.(Los Alamitos, 3/6/2011) Los Alamitos’ City Council is set to meet at 5:30 and 7:00 this Monday night to discuss a wide variety of issues.
Surprisingly, the 7 p.m. regular meeting has nothing on the agenda that I could find related to the title issues that cloud the required vacating of Kaylor Street as part of the Medical Center expansion that the majority voted to approve at their last meeting. Interesting.

Tuesday Council Agenda raises new questions about Kaylor

(Los Alamitos, 2/20/2011) The agenda for Tuesday’s regular session has been posted, with links to hundreds of pages of documents related to the Medical Center Expansion which the Council majority so far seems to want to fast track, rather than take the time to get it right.
The staff recommendation regarding the Kaylor Street abandonment seems to ignore the Title Report’s request, which supports allegations that the street is neither owned by the city nor the hospital. The net result could well be that only phase I (the 4th medical office building) could be Read more
