(6/27/2010, Los Alamitos, CA) The Los Alamitos City Council is holding a Special Meeting this Monday at 5:30 p.m.  for the purposes of:

  1. Holding the required public hearing on the Annual Budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, apparently with a million dollar plus deficit (more on that later)
  2. Adopting the budget resolution.
  3. Adopting the city’s fiscal year appropriations limit in accordance with state law (the “Gann limit”).

Interestingly, the appropriations limit the city is set to adopt is almost 70% higher Read more

(Los Alamitos, 6/21/2010)  Once again, you get to be the reporter and the commentator.  The rules are simple:

Tell us what you observed that you think is significant.    Please do not assume the reader saw the meeting–lots of people don’t get cable–a simple explanation makes it easier for people to understand.

As always,  try to focus on issues, use family friendly language, and try to be somewhat diplomatic.

(Los Alamitos, 6/18/2010)  After a two week postponement from the date announced by Mayor Marilyn Poe a month ago,  it looks like the Los Alamitos City Council will finally hold that public hearing on their decision to go with the second highest bidder as the exclusive trash contractor for all Los Alamitos residents and businesses.

The Council majority seems bound and determined to move forward with the bid from Consolidated Disposal, successor to Briggeman Disposal who had successfully obtained the contact without any bidding for the past twenty years.

Members of the Council majority and city staff seem convinced that Read more

(5/14/2010, Los Alamitos)  Once again the city Council has two meetings set for Monday, with several important items on the agenda and one surprising omission.

At 5:30 the Council meets in Special Session to Read more

(5/3/2010)The Los Alamitos City Council has scheduled a special meeting for 5:30 tonight to review the city’s proposed 2010 – 2011 Fiscal Year Budget, with the city exploring options for dealing with looming deficits.

Then in their regular, 7 p.m.  meeting our Council will address staff recommendations on the use of the funds generated from the Race on the Base,  including covering the ongoing deficit in the Pool Fund, as well as recommendations to move forward with Consolidated Disposal for the Read more

(4/19/2010, Los Alamitos)  Once again we throw the reporting open to the community.  Since different people notice different things and since there is a very wide variety of views here in Los Alamitos, everyone can report what they thought was important at the meeting.

As we reported earlier (click for “Race money for pool, interim replacement for fired. . .), there are several very interesting Read more

(4/17/2010, Los Alamitos)  Several items of interest are on the agenda for Monday night’s 7 p.m. Los Alamitos City Council meeting.

These include the appointment of Terrence Beaman to serve as the city’s Interim Finance Director following the Council’s apparent firing of Nita McKay in closed session two weeks ago.  Mr Beaman will be paid at a rate of $70 per hour.  He previously served as Los Alamitos’ Read more

(Los Alamitos, April 5, 2010)  Tonight both Los Alamitos City Council meetings should be televised on Los Al TV3.  And, once again, this is your opportunity to be the reporter on what you observed, whether in person or on TV.

The 5:30 Special Meeting (click here for agenda with links to reports) focuses on additional budget cuts due to declines in income in the city’s budget for the current year (7/1/2009 – 6/30/2010).

The 7:00 Regular Meeting (click here for Regular Meeting agenda with links to reports) is fairly light, although it does include recommended approval of Mayor Poe and Mayor Pro Tem Stephens’ recommended weighting of criteria for evaluating the bids.  I suspect the matter will be approved routinely, although it appears that how much you and I pay for our weekly trash pick up is a very low priority to the Council–only given about 3% weight (click here for a more detailed explanation in my earlier post today).

Once again, it’s primarily up to you, the reader, to let the world know what you Read more

(Los Alamitos, 4/5/2010)If you live or work in Los Alamitos, the City Council could easily reduce your monthly trash bill for the next ten years.

They could just as easily increase your bill.

Whether your bill goes up or down will largely be determined by a Council vote tonight on the weighting of criteria for evaluating the seven proposals received for this decade’s Solid Waste Disposal Contract.

Unfortunately, as it now stands, the recommendations by the Council’s subcommittee of Mayor Poe and Mayor Pro Tem Stephens appear to Read more
