(10/3/2013, Orange County, Ca) That was the text message on my wife’s phone that came in at 6:55 this morning.
The “Father of the Jesus movement” and of contemporary Christian music and of the Calvary Chape movementl went home to be with his Lord and Savior as he slept at home at 3:00 this morning, after battling lung cancer for several years. West Orange County Calvary Chapels include Calvary Chapel Los Alamitos (meeting at Rush Park in Rossmoor), Calvary Chapel Cypress, Calvary Chapel Pacific Coast (which started in Seal Beach at McGaugh School) and Calvary Chapel West Grove.
Though weak and on oxygen, he preached three sermons just four days ago, and did a live one hour call-in radio show day before yesterday! At 86 years of age, however he did forget one thing during the second service on Sunday: To take up the offering! Obviously, he had his priorities right!
The title of the message, appropriately enough, was ”Be Strong in the Faith.” The text was Romans 4:19-21:
Without weakening in his faith, he [Abraham] faced the fact that his body was as good as dead. . . Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. (NIV)
What an inspiration, and what a testimony to God’s faithfulness!
A private memorial service will be held, along with a larger public service to be announced in the days ahead. This Sunday’s morning services at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa will center on Pastor Chuck’s homecoming. Service times are 7:45, 9:30, and 11:15. The church is a half mile north of the 405 freeway at 3800 Fairview Rd. between Sunflower and McArthur.
