(Los Alamitos, 5/19/2013) They’re at it again. An anonymous group of “concerned Los Alamitos residents” is smearing one of Los Alamitos’ finest elected officials with an expensive hit piece filled with half truths and distortions.
It’s time to set the record straight.
Then to figure out who’s behind this effort, which started a week ago at Cypress’ City Council meeting. First, the lies and distortions, in the order they appear in the 8 1/2 x 11 inch glossy flyer, shown on the right. Let’s take it in order:
1. Do we “want accused criminals running our City?”
It depends on who’s doing the accusing, what the crime is, and what the evidence is. I’m not just an accused criminal, I’m an admitted criminal. . . guilty of parking longer than the time on my parking meter in Westwood.
In this case, Cypress City Council Member Doug Bailey is doing the accusing and the evidence clearly suggests no crime was committed. But first, what the crime allegedly was:
2. ”Illegal recording activities, in violation of California Code 632.” Specifically, according to Cypress’ Event Newspaper, having a small tape recorder running when Mayor Kusumoto met with Doug Bailey and Assemblyman Travis Allen at a restaurant.
The problem is, PC Section 632 specifically excludes recordings in a public place, where there is a no presumption of privacy. Places like the restaurant where the recording was made. By the way, according to Kusumoto, also quoted in the Event,
“I told him I was recording this and set the recorder on the corner of the table right in front of him and me.”
Apparently Mr. Bailey was doing more talking than listening. I’ve been by multiple reliable sources told this is not uncommon for Mr. Bailey.
3. “As reported by the OC Breeze Newspaper.” The Breeze isn’t a newspaper. Editor Shelley Henderson has told me that herself. It’s a lifestyle publication with a monthly print edition. Hard to call a monthly a newspaper. Let alone something that exists only in cyperspace–no paper at all!
4. ”Previously investigated by the City Attorney for multiple violations against his own colleagues. . . “ Investigated at the request of a political opponent, who later voted to drop all the charges. Since then, Council Member Kusumoto was unanimously elected by his colleagues to be Mayor! Including the Member who had brought the baseless accusations.
But here’s the interesting part. Those baseless charges were raised at a time when Warren Kusumoto’s vote was blocking. . . . guess what?
A signal on Katella at Enterprise for entry into the Race Track/Golf Course Property!
The same signal the Race Track owners and ProLogis want right now, which Mayor Kusumoto’s vote is still blocking!
5. ”Mayor Kusumoto has once again decided to disgrace our community!” Really? Warren Kusumoto woke up one morning and said, “I wonder if I should once again disgrace my community?”
I’ve known Warren Kusumoto for over a decade, dating back to when we were both volunteers in a local Boy Scout Troop. Warren is a good man. This evil attack on Warren is an attack on all that is good and decent in our community. The people disgracing our community are the people behind this flyer!
6. “This flyer was paid for by concerned Los Alamitos residents.” (in very small print at the bottom of the flyer). Maybe. But I wonder where they got the money to pay for it. . .
So who’s behind the flyer?
Last time flyers like this circulated in Los Alamitos, five years ago, supposedly paid for by Los Alamitos citizens, it turned out most of the money was coming from a Newport Beach businessman who wanted his firm’s solid waste contract renewed. The victims were two Council Members with kids in our schools, who insisted the contract be put out for bid for the first time in the City’s history.
The brutalization chased the two Council Members out of public office. And the Council Members who replaced them proceeded to award that Newport Beach businessman’s firm the solid waste disposal franchise, despite his firm’s bid being $5,000,000 higher than the lowest qualified bidder!
Let’s see. . . what big business owners might not like Kusumoto at this point in time. His election is still over a year away.
As for the Los Al residents, a big clue appeared in a comment on the OC Breeze report on Bailey’s comments (bold added, items in [brackets] are mine:
Lisette Gabler replied:
Mayor Kusumoto’s actions have now caused serious consequences. I just spoke to Chuck Sylvia who was on the Los Alamitos Medical Center Hospital Board of Directors for six years.
The hospital was going to use the race track for their employee parking while the new parking structure was being built. According to Mr. Sylvia’s sources the who[le] deal to use the race track in Cypress for parking has fallen apart.
So, because of Kusumoto’s actions’ the whole deal to build a brand new hospital has in effect, fallen apart [according to Chuck Sylvia. Hit piece # 2?].
A little while ago, I was handed flyers for my area to pass out regarding Kusumoto being made to resign at Monday’s meeting.
I do not know who has made these flyers , but it took some money as they are expertly done and don’t look like they were done on someone’s home printer. I have asked several people who have made flyers in the past and nobody knows who made these flyers. [but you do know who handed them to you. Could that have been Chuck Sylvia, who you seem to have spoken to about the time you were being handed the flyers that nobody knows who made?]
I do believe that Mr.Kusumoto should resign at Monday’s meeting as he has caused the hospital deal to fall apart. After all the whole area besides Los Alamitos, depends on that hospital at the very least for emergency health care. His actions were disgraceful but he has now causes major harm and should not be a councilman.
Wow, The race track owners decided to cancel their parking deal with Tenet because Kusumoto was Mayor? And Tenet can’t build a multi million dollar hospital because they can’t find a location for temporary parking during construction? Uh, makes sense to. . . Lissette?
Sounds like more disinformation and lies.
Whoever is ultimately behind it, smearing a good man like Warren Kusumoto is wrong, wrong, WRONG. In fact, it’s downright evil!
Decent people will oppose this smear campaign, because it’s full of lies.
“You belong to your father, the devil, and you love to do the evil things that he does. . . . He has alwyas hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”
Jesus, quoted by his youngest disciple, John (John 8:44, NLT)
Hopefully whoever is behind this will come to their senses, do the right thing, admit it’s wrong, and reveal the source of the money behind it.
If nothing else, it’s one more reason to attend or record Los Al’s City Council meeting Monday night (click here for agenda). (Starts at 6, arrive by 5:50 if you want to park close, 4 presentations should end around 6:15)
As always, your perspective, reports, and comments are encouraged. Try to keep it relatively diplomatic and to use family friendly language.
