January 2, 2013 in Community Calendar & Bulletin Board, Restaurants and food trucks, Your reporting and comments By: Dave Emerson
(1/2/2013, Los Alamitos by Dave Emerson)  Time for our monthly calendar & bulletin board.  I’ve got a couple of things that are time urgent that I’ll get up now, with more to be added in the next day or two.
In the meantime, you can use a comment to post any upcoming event you think might be of interest to Los Alamitos or Rossmoor residents or businesses.
Here’s what we’ve got so far:
- Wednesday, January 2: Â Â Â No Parks , Rec, & Cultural Affairs Meeting this month.
- Thursday, January 3: Â Trash pickup pushed back a day due to New Years. Â Put your trash out Thursday night, along with your Christmas Tree, stand removed.
- Thursday, January 3: Â No “Picnic at the Plaza.” Â Los Alamitos Thursday night food trucks will return a week later on January 10. Â I just got this today straight from the chief honcho’s keyboard, so I’m pretty sure we got it right this time, no matter what the Patch says!
- Friday, January 4: Â Street Sweeper will be by, but most likely ticketing will be suspended again for the day. Â Hopefully the street sweeper will come after the Christmas trees are picked up. Â Tip: Â I pull any uncollected trash “cans” into our driveway apron before the street sweeper comes.
- Friday, 1/4/2013:  City Hall Closed. Â
- Monday, 1/7/2013, 6 pm, Special Council Meeting on Management Salaries, Mayoral selection procedure & more.  Broadcast live on LosAlTV3!
- Wednesday, 1/9/2013 , 7 pm, Traffic Commission
- Monday, 1/14/2013, 7 pm, Planning Commission, City Council Chambers
- Friday, 1/18/2013: Â City Hall Closed.
- Monday, 1/21/2013: Â City Hall Closed, City Council Regular Meeting moved to Tuesday?
- Friday, 2/1/2013: Â City Hall Closed.
- Check back for updates as the month progresses. Â Even better, add your own events in a comment below!
2 items for Los Alamitos residents who were wondering:
1. Christmas tree pickup on your trash day continues in Los Alamitos through Friday of next week.
2. Tree pickup is done by a 4th truck. Trees should be placed in the street near the curb with any stand removed, even if they were put on at the lot. If you got your tree at The Youth Center Lot you can save the screw-in stand if you purchased it for use next year.
4:52 pm Friday, 1/4/2013: Just spoke with Consolidated. They said the pickup of Christmas trees is running late today. They only have one truck doing it. What they don’t pick up today they say they’ll pick up tomorrow, Saturday, so if your tree’s still out for pickup, just leave it there.
Some day your prince will come.
Or at least your Christmas tree removal guy.
So after leaving my aging and now dried out tree in the street for five nights I called Consolidated again this morning to see what happened to that late Friday or sometime Saturday pickup I was promised.
I was told the tree would be picked up on my regular trash day.
I explained again that it wasn’t picked up on my regular trash day, nor were my neighbors’ trees, and I was promised a Saturday pickup, which also didn’t occur.
I was told they didn’t care about my neighbors but my tree would be picked up on my regular trash day.
I asked for a supervisor, who seemed to get a better grasp of the seemingly complex problem, and was told they’d try to pick my tree up to day and tomorrow.
I reiterated that I thought five nights of having my decomposing tree in the street was excessive and since we’re paying about five million bucks extra for their wonderful service, I really thought they ought to pick it up today sometime, even if that meant their consultant George Briggeman himself came by & got it.
She said she’d see what she could do and promised to get back to me, so stay tuned.
She then asked if there was anything else she could do for me.
As a matter of fact, there was. I asked her to make sure my neighbors’ trees were also picked up and to find out exactly how much of Los Alamitos still has not gotten last week’s Christmas tree pick-up, and let me know so I could put it up on the blog.
She said she’d see what she could do and call back.
Stay tuned.
And, especially if you know trees weren’t picked up Friday or Saturday in your neighborhood, please let me know via a comment in reply to this one or through the “contact us” button at the top of this page.
In the grand scheme of things, it’s only a minor inconvenience.
Overpaying five million bucks for it is another matter.
There are many trees that have not been picked up in the Highlands …
no pickup in carrier row either. Six trees still in the gutter nearby (wonder how that will affect street sweeping). There were seven but one neighbor cut his up and put it in his green bin last week.
JB & JM: Thanks. I also got an e-mail from a Highlands resident indicating “NO pickup at all” there. I drove through Old Dutch Haven & observed many trees still waiting there as well.
I also received a message from the diligent supervisor at Consolidated/Allied/Republic indicating my tree should be picked up by “4:00, 5:00 at the latest” today. So far, it’s looking like more like 5:00.
I called back to Consolidated and left a message for the supervisor I spoke with that, while I appreciated her work on my tree it appears that all Los Alamitos single family neighborhoods south of Katella did not get their trees picked up last week.
If you live in Apartment Row or live North of Katella and your trees did not get picked up on your last week’s trash day, please use a comment to let me know your neighborhood & I’ll pass that on.
If you live in the Highlands, Old Dutch, Carrier Row or New Dutch and your tree was, in fact, picked up last Friday or Saturday, please pass on that info via comment below or the “contact us” button.
I’ll keep you posted once I hear.
Although in real estate we usually work for 6% of gross equity, all I’m asking from Consolidated for my assistance is a mere 1% of their $5,000,000 overcharge vs. the lowest bidder.
7 p.m., Council Chambers on katella.
Agenda items include election of 2013 Officers, a staff report on Traffic Control during Phase I of the Medical Center Expansion, and High Traaffic Volume on Los Alamitos Blvd. at the two entrances to Rossmoor Highlands.
A relatively light schedule. For some reason, traffic on Farquhar was dropped from this month’s agenda..

This just in from Rossmoor Predator Management team: [updated below]
Last night (Thursday, 1/17/13), a family in northwest Rossmoor (Wembley north of Shakespeare) came home to find their house ransacked by burglars. Even worse, their dog, “Lucky”, a five year old beagle was gone.
They don’t know if the burglars took their dog or the dog is loose running around in the community. This family is devastated.
Please keep an eye out for “Lucky” so we can get him home. If Lucky is spotted, please call 562 253-2330. Once Lucky is returned home, this comment will be updated.
And remember, we are law enforcement’s eyes in our neighborhood. If you see something you think might be suspicious, call the police and let them check it out!!
Friday afternoon the resident, Carol came home and suddenly “Lucky” came from the backyard into the house through the doggy door. It is assumed that a neighbor found Lucky and returned him to his backyard.
Could Lucky have found his own way home and came into the backyard or did a burglar with a heart decided that he had stolen enough from the family and returned Lucky. Only Lucky knows the answers.
Looks like “Lucky” was well named!
Nobody who’s answering the phone at City Hall seems to know if the street sweeper will be coming by on this semi-rainy Friday or not, but our diligent police dispatcher was able to determine parking enforcement for street sweeping won’t be in effect today.
I’m relatively sure the sweeper won’t be coming around either. I’ll see if I can get a definite answer on what the semi-rainy day policy is.
Los Alamitos “Picnic at the Plaza” Thursday night food trucks for Thursday, 1/31/2013:
Chomp chomp.
Sexy burger
Fresh fries
Soho taco
Rancho a go go.
Then if that’s not enough walk to Hoff’s for desert!
