Welcome 2012
JM here.
Many people use the New Year to set and/or re-set goals that they have. Some of those goals may be for their personal well-being, for their jobs, for their family.
One thing that has been shown to work well in helping people keep their newly established goals has been to share them with others. For instance in 2011 I made a goal to not fluctuate my weight up by my normal 10-15 lbs between Oct 31 and Jan 1. I am proud to say that I started Oct 31 at 215 and today (as I post this) I am at 211 (1 lb short of my end of year weight of 210, a goal set last Jan 1 when I was at 228).
Feel free to share your goals for 2012 here. You can come back and review it in December of 2012 and see how well you have done in keeping Read more

Los Al Police report increase in local catalytic converter thefts
Filed Under Crime & Police, News you can use | Leave a Comment
(Los Alamitos, 12/30/2011) From Los Alamitos Police: Los Alamitos has seen an increase in catalytic converter thefts in recent weeks.
Catalytic converters are an essential part of your vehicle’s exhaust system, but they are being targeted by thieves who are intent on cashing in on the metals these parts possess.
Higher profile pick-ups and sport utility vehicles are especially susceptible due to the easier access to these vehicle parts. Toyotas are often targeted, but other Read more

Greg Laurie: Christmas in Heaven
Filed Under Inspiration, Sunday Sermons, Songs & Stories | Leave a Comment
(12/25/2011, Los Alamitos) Today’s “Sunday Sermon” is taken from Pastor Greg Laurie’s Christmas devotional. Like many in Los Alamitos, Pastor Greg’s Christmas is “tinged with sadness” because of a loved one who isn’t here this Christmas.
In his devotional, Pastor Greg talks about the loss of his son, Christopher (“Topher,” pictured above on right with his wife, father, & daughter above):
Merry Christmas to all of you!
Christmas is a day of joy. But for me and my family, it is also tinged with sadness, because it is a day when Christopher’s absence is intensely felt.
I have to tell you, Topher loved Christmas! It was always a big deal to him as a little boy, and when he became a father, he Read more

What Christmas is all about
Filed Under Holidays, Inspiration, Sunday Sermons, Songs & Stories | 2 Comments
(12/24/2011, Los Alamitos) Every Christmas Eve, before bedtime, as I was growing up my father would gather my sister and I and read the familiar words of the Christmas Story from the 2nd chapter of Luke’s Gospel.
Then he and Mom would send us off to bed as they burned the midnight oil assembling and/or wrapping trikes, bikes, train sets, workbenches, and assorted other gifts.
Eugene Peterson”s The Message paraphrase style translation tells Dr. Luke’s familiar account of Jesus’ birth in a more contemporary language that, for me at least, adds life to the familiar words (If you prefer the more traditional language translations, scroll on down)
Luke 2: 1 – 20 (The Message):
The Birth of Jesus
1-5About that time Caesar Augustus ordered a census to be taken throughout the Empire. This was the first census when Quirinius was governor of Syria. Everyone had to travel to his own ancestral hometown to be accounted for. So Joseph went from the Galilean town of Nazareth up to Bethlehem in Judah, David’s town, for the census. As a descendant of David, he had to go there. He went with Mary, his fiancée, who was pregnant.
6-7While they were there, the time came for her to give birth. She gave birth to a son, her firstborn. She wrapped him in a blanket and laid him in a manger, because there was no room in the hostel.
An Event for Everyone

If you’re not asking these important questions, you probably have kids or grandkids who are.

Gas leak repairs on Los Al Blvd. to end Thursday
Filed Under 2012 Issues, News you can use, Traffic | 4 Comments
(Los Alamitos, 12/21/2011) Late Wednesday update: Repairs should be completed around mid day Thursday. When I drove by mid morning enroute to Nicks II for Nate’s breakfast burrito Americano, traffic wasn’t too severely affected but by mid day it was a different story.
Gas leak?
This morning, when I snapped the above photo, I noticed no significant markings on the trucks, but several holes being dug in the middle of the Boulevard. One of the workers told me it they were doing an emergency repair to do what he thought was a gas leak at Read more
