13 Los Al Food Trucks for this Thursday, 9/1/2011
Filed Under Local events, News you can use | 17 Comments
(8/31/2011, Los Alamitos) This week we’ve got a baker’s dozen trucks scheduled, including both the OC Trucks featured on the Great Food Truck Race II! (Location, addresses, and times in the graphic above.)
Call it Los Al din-din a g0-go, “Picnic at the Plaza,” or Los Alamitos Thursday night dinner to go, it’s turned into one of the biggest and most popular mid week evening food truck events around.
Not sure how many of the trucks will actually make it, but they’ve been running around 90% lately, which is pretty good for food trucks.
It’s important to Read more

Your 8/31 – 9/6 local media reporting and comments post
Filed Under Community News, Dean Grose, News Enterprise & other local media, Your reporting & comments | 3 Comments
(8/31/2011, Los Alamitos) It’s Wednesday, which means it’s time for our weekly post where you can report and comment on items of interest you come across in any of our local media.
This week seems like a good one to focus on our ever increasing online media, since I once again couldn’t find very much news in today’s edition of the paper formerly known as the News Enterprise.
So I flipped over to our newest online news source, former News Enterprise editor Shelley Henderson’s Orange County Breeze , and found an attractive home page with lots of content, including a fair amount of reporting by Shelley as well as even more “Courtesy” content from local press releases.
I was surprised to also find a “Guest Editorial” by former Los Alamitos Mayor Dean Grose, ”California headed for

Traffic Advisory: Los Al Schools open Wednesday, 8/31
Filed Under Education & Schools, News you can use, Traffic | Leave a Comment
(8/30/11, Los Alamitos) If you’re a parent, you already know. For the rest of us, Los Alamitos Schools (except for year-round Weaver Elementary) open earlier this year. That means:
- All of us need to keep our eyes on the road, watch out for little pedestrians and cyclists, & keep our cell phones in the back seat, like we should have been doing all along.
- The commuters among us need to allow extra time to get past the “normal” congestion of all secondary students being transported to the very northern boundary of the District, incoming traffic from out of district students, & the added flow of teachers & workers.
FYI, our Middle Schools have changed their Read more

(8/29/2011, Los Alamitos) Last week the choir sang a song that seemed especially appropriate for “Great Recession” America.
It was written over a hundred years ago, but it seems as relevant today as when it was written, maybe more so.
You probably know it, but, if not, here are the words:
When upon life’s billows you are tempest tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God hath done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your many blessings, see what God hath done.
Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly,
And you will keep singing as the days go by.
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God hath done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your many blessings, see what God hath done.
When you look at others with their lands and gold, Read more

“The Help:” A great movie to catch this weekend
Filed Under Decency, Education & Schools, Entertainment, News you can use | 6 Comments
(8/25/2011, Los Alamitos) If you live in Los Alamitos, this is one movie you probably need to see. Even if you’re not a Dean Grose supporter.
We went last Friday based on a strong endorsement from Rebecca Zeelenberg, the owner of Los Alamitos’ best hair salon, New Attitude, and we were glad we did.
It’s a little like a slightly ruder and cruder version of Driving Miss Daisy, crossed with “The Real Read more

Local Governance Around The World. Where Do We Fit?
Filed Under Highlands Guy's Thursday column | 4 Comments
(Los Alamitos, 8/25/2011) by Highlands Guy: The way people have been governed, for thousands of years, is an ever evolving landscape. From small, tribal, rural, communities to large modern municipalities, people have put in place, either by the populace or by a ruling party/king/dictator, rules and regulations for being a member of that group.
Los Alamitos practices a form of representative democracy that is used in many locales around the world. And as long as the rules are followed, it has proven, over time, to be the Read more

“This is the Stuff” that drives me crazy!
Filed Under Inspiration, Sunday Sermons, Songs & Stories | Leave a Comment
(8/21/2011, Los Alamitos) [No, this time the title's not referring to our City Council. Today's Sunday, which means it's time to take a look at things of even greater significance. . . like losing your car keys:]
There’s a humorously touching song I haven’t been able to get out of my head this week. I first heard it last Sunday at the final, packed out night of Greg Lauri’s OC Harvest Crusade.
The singer/composer, Francesca Battistelli, has a way of bringing St. James words right into the 21st century America:
Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides. You know that under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors. So don’t try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work so you become mature and well-developed, not deficient in any way. (James 1:2-4, The Message Paraphrase)
Here’s how Francesca Battistelli put it in her song, geared a little more to the challenges a young mother faces in America today:
I lost my keys
In the great unknown
And call me please
Cause I can’t find my phoneThis is the stuff
That drives me crazy
This is the stuff
That’s getting to me lately
In the middle of my little mess
I forget how big I’m blessed
This is the stuff
That gets under my skin
But I’ve gotta trust
You know exactly what You’re doing
Might not be what Read more
