(4/28/2011, 10:30 p.m., Los Alamitos)This just in from a local resident, via the “contact us” button at the top center of each page:

This was the best way I could think of to get the word out. I hope this is the correct forum to spread the word.

I wanted to let all of my Los Al neighbors know so the same thing doesn’t happen to them. There is a band of gardeners driving our neighborhoods with as many as four or five pickup trucks and 20 men. They are fast talking and very slick. They solicit multiple residences at the same time.

Their offer is to re-seed and fertilize your lawn. By avoiding specifics they lead the unsuspecting resident to believe their service will cost as little as $50, which is a steal. The price is based on how many non conventional bags of seed and fertilizer are used. They are great talkers, personable enough, and they move fast. This is where the trickery begins.

The head gardener, or salesman uses some fast talking and Read more

(Los Alamitos, 4/28/2011, by “Highlands Guy”)It is time, actually way past the time, for Los Alamitos to become an active member of the international community.

A good start down the path could be found in the sister city program. The potential of sister city partnerships can be quite diverse and include multiple types of municipal, business, professional, educational and cultural exchanges or projects. Thus, there could be benefits to almost all of the local folks, from students, to businesses, to the church community, to travelers, to city administrators.

It would be great to pursue a relationship with a community that is similar in terms of geography, population, industries and interests. But it would certainly be interesting to be paired with Read more

(Los Alamitos 4/27/2011)Time for our weekly Wednesday post where you can report, respond to, and comment on items that catch your interest in any media covering Los Alamitos over the course of the next 7 days.

I’ll start off with Kudos to N-E General Manager Guy Cariglio for figuring out a way to get the paper on our driveways (or at least my driveway) before 8 A.M. on Wednesdays.  Guy  tells me it’s just a matter of the distributor’s schedule, but I say if he get’s slammed for a mistake that’s out of his control, he may as well take credit for something good that’s likewise beyond his control.

Guy also deserves credit for initiating the paper’s increased focus on “hard news,” evidenced this week by Shelley Henderson’s detailed reporting on the last Los Al City Council meeting.

(4/26/2011, from Los Alamitos Police Department News):

Last week, Long Beach Animal Care Services began getting calls from residents about sea lions coming ashore. Since that time, more than a half dozen sea lions have been reported in the cities of Long Beach and Seal Beach. Some of these animals have shown signs of the naturally occurring domoic acid poisoning recently Read more

(4/26/2011, Los Alamitos)  In an effort to cut costs, Los Alamitos officials called a lunch meeting yesterday with Cypress and Seal Beach officials to discuss a possible merger of the Cypress, Los Alamitos, and Seal Beach Police Departments.

Attending from Los Alamitos were Mayor Pro Tem Troy Edgar and City Manager Jeff Stewart.  Seal Beach was represented by Mayor Mike Levitt, Council Member Gary Miller, and Acting City Manager Jill Ingram.   At least one Cypress officials was also in attendance.

Seal Beach, at least, does not appear to be interested.  ”We’re not going to join up with those two cities” was Mayor Levitt’s unambiguous analysis.  City Manager Ingram echoed Levitt’s sentiments.

Troy Edgar, however, appeared more interested in exploring the possibilities: Read more

(4/24/2011, Los Alamitos)Although the morning here in Los Alamitos seemed more suited to Good Friday than Easter, the real joy followers of Christ have at Easter is not dependent on outer circumstances but on God’s victory over death and evil, both at the cross and empty tomb 2,000 years ago, and in our lives and communities as we seek His resurrection  power to triumph over evil in our daily lives.

To our readers who share the “blessed hope” of a loving Savior who has conquered death, may your Easter Sunday, and every day, be filled with the love, joy and peace of our risen Savior.

To those still not exactly sure what it all means, I encourage you to read through the four earliest accounts of Jesus life found in the first four “books” of the New Testament.  Mark’s account is the briefest.

And to all our readers, may Read more

Yes, you read it correctly, 2012. If Obama can start campaigning for re-election, heck, so can our local folks who have been thinking about a seat on the city council. And, there will be two positions coming open.

Now is the time to start setting the stage for a run for the most important (OK the only) elected post in our city. Hear ye, hear ye, all you potential candidates out there, it is now time to come out of the woodwork. This is the time to start working on name recognition and forging alliances.

Although I’m not exactly sure how to objectively evaluate certain traits, I would like to offer potential candidates a few comments on the characteristics that I would like see them possess. On the top of my list would have to be moral clarity. What I am alluding to is related to how they have conducted their lives in relation to their Read more

(4/20/2011, Los Alamitos) As announced at Tuesday’s Council Meeting and discussed in the comments here under our regular “Your Reporting” post on the Council Meeting,  the U.S. Bank parking lot right off Katella next to St. Isadores will become our town’s second location for regular food truck dinners.

We’ve been occasionally posting the line up for the Tuesday evening Din Din a Go Go that’s been attracting scores of people and about a half dozen food trucks  every Tuesday evening to the My Gear store parking lot just south of Katella on Winners Circle for months.

The new Thursday “din din” is set to kick off tomorrow night with 8 trucks scheduled: Read more

(Los Alamitos, 4/18/11)This week’s “Sunday Sermon” comes on a Monday, but it’s timed to coincide with a week that is Holy for both Jews and Christians.  If you have no interest in such things, a post for your comments and reporting on tonight’s 7 p.m. Los Alamitos City Council meeting will be put up in a few hours.

Sunset tonight marks the beginning of Passover, which might make today “Good Friday,” if ancient monks had done a better job of synchronizing Easter with the Jewish, rather than Roman calendar.

In any case, this week is a time for get-togethers with friends and family, when we all might do well to heed the advice Jesus of Nazereth gave his  hostess at a get together shortly before the original “Holy Week” kicked off.

This is the image e-mailed to her friends by Orange County Republican committeewoman and Tea Party activist Marilyn Davenport(4/17/2010, Los Alamitos, updated 4/18) by J.M. Ivler (updates by Dave Emerson) In general I wouldn’t post this as it has more to do with Fullerton than Los Alamitos, but on the positive side it appears that Mr. Grose is no longer alone in Orange County politics for “not getting it.”

The Weekly has obtained a copy of an email sent to fellow conservatives this week by Marilyn Davenport, a Southern California Tea Party activist and member of the central committee of the Orange County Republican Party.

Under the words, “Now you know why no birth certificate,” there’s an Obama family portrait showing them as apes.
