The photo on the left shows a scene from the “Challenge Room” in the 2007 recount of the battle of the Nguyens for O.C. Supervisor. That’s Registrar Neal Kelley holding a ballot for Janet Nguyen which was voided because Read more

Filed Under 2010 Issues, City Council Meetings, Planning & Zoning | 5 Comments
(11/28/2010, Los Alamitos) You may not have noticed, but the last City Council meeting was not adjourned but was continued to 5 p.m. tonight, 11/29/10.
The main purpose of the “continued” portion of the meeting is to approve five projects for submission to Orange County for funding under the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program for the Fiscal Year 2011-2012 (7/1/2011 – 6/30/2012). The deadline for submission is this Wednesday, 12/1, and require an approved City Council Resolution, thus the timing of this meeting.
Funding for this year’s grants was announced just a month ago, 10/28/2010, and this year’s deadline for submissions was moved up a month from last year’s to 12/1, so our city staff has been working within Read more

However, work on the project’s “west segment,” which includes the one year closure of the northbound 405 connector with 7th. St eastbound is set to begin around New Year’s Day.

Highlands Guy On the Hospital
Filed Under 2010 Issues, Highlands Guy's Thursday column, Los Al Medical Center, Planning & Zoning | Leave a Comment
(Los Alamitos, 11/25/2010)Without knowing I was going to post on the hospital this week, Highlands Guy prepared his post early then sent it to me after my first pot had run. So here’s one other perspective on the Los Alamitos Medical Center Expansion for you to ponder as you’re waiting in line on Black Friday. Yes, you should be able to pull us up fine on your i-phone.
by Highlands Guy:
So, who’s asking the hard questions of the city council on the real impact of the proposed changes by Tenet Healthcare? What’s the area going to look like in 20 years and what will those city folks who gave it their blessing going to do when our city has deteriorated as a results of their decisions? The answer to the second question is nothing. Because even if they still live here, there won’t be a thing that they can do to reign in the monster.
Oh, I know, let’s spend some city money on a traffic mitigation study. Gimme a break! I’ll bet my daughter has already learned in her freshman science class at CSULB that there are only a finite number of cars that can take up a specific space at one time…Hello? Tenet wants Read more

Concerns regarding hospital expansion besides traffic
Filed Under 2010 Issues, Los Al Medical Center, Planning & Zoning | 5 Comments
(11/24/2010, Los Alamitos)(This is part 2 of a 2 part post taken from my letter to the city regarding the E.I.R. on the hospital expansion. Part I addressed traffic.)
2. Impact on Future Development
Even if the traffic issues are mitigated, the result could be an even worse problem Even if it’s possible, traffic mitigation is going to be difficult and costly. That will make mitigation for any future development or redevelopment in Los Alamitos even less possible or cost prohibitive. In other words, with their expansion plan, Tenett may well be foreclosing our future.
Part of the problem may be the apparent Read more

Traffic concerns relative to the L.A.M.C. expansion
Filed Under 2010 Issues, Los Al Medical Center, Planning & Zoning | 2 Comments
(11/22/2010) This is part I of a 2 part post that consists of my letter to the city regarding my concerns about the hospital EIR.
I am a 22 year resident of Los Alamitos and a 50 year resident of the Los Alamitos area, as well as a Realtor and broker serving Los Alamitos for the past 30 years.
I am very familiar with the LAMC and auxiliary Medical Office Buildings as both my parents and my wife’s parents have doctors there and have been patients at the hospital, as has my son, neighbors and friends. I have visited there at just about every hour of the day or night.
In regard to the planned expansion I appreciate the LAMC’s, efforts to reach out to the community, but I have concerns that the net result is a step in the wrong direction. Initially I thought Read more

Sunday Sermon: Preparation for “Thanksgiving Week”
Filed Under Inspiration, Sunday Sermons, Songs & Stories | 7 Comments
(11/21/2010)In many ways Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. As with Christmas, however, the real meaning of the holiday tends to get buried in an overwhelming flood of far less significant things.
Personally, I wish we could devote a whole week to Thanksgiving. In fact, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to devote your entire life to giving thanks, both to God and to those who brighten our lives every day in so many ways big and small.
To get us into the “Thanksgiving Spirit,” at least until 4 a.m. on “Black Friday,” I’m borrowing today’s “Sunday Sermon” from President Lincoln’s first Thanksgiving Proclamation.
What about the Pilgrims?
True, the first three “first Thanksgivings” were celebrated by early settlers on what was to become American soil. (See “Thanksgiving: A uniquely American tradition” for a brief summary of all three. You may be surprised to learn that Read more

(Los Alamitos, 11/18/2010) It’s Thursday, so it’s time for a break from Dave and some thoughts from our Thursday columnist, “Highlands Guy.”
Something’s got him thinking about City Managers, an interesting job, as you can see from this picture of our own Jeff Stewart kicking off his tenure here investigating compost at the Base a year and a half ago.
Our Highlands Guy offers good insights that have changed my thinking on a topic that, as he explains, should always be Read more
