(8/31/2010, Los Alamitos)When our seven City Council candidates turned in their paperwork, they also were given the opportunity to submit a statement for the sample ballot and a Candidate Information sheet.

Although it cost a maximum of $1,400 to have a candidate statement translated into whatever languages are required for Los Alamitos and printed in all sample ballots, the Information Sheet is free.

The sheet indicates it’s purpose is “to provide information to the general public,” and candidates are asked to “Please fill out any item you are willing to issue to the press as public information.”

(8/31/2010, Los Alamitos)  Just a reminder to those of us who no longer have school age kids that all it’s back to school time throughout the  Los Alamitos Unified School District tomorrow, Wednesday, September 1!

That means little ones and not too careful bigger ones walking all over town.  Getting their “school legs” back.

Time to slow down, to put down the cell phone, and be extra alert for young pedestrians, bicyclists, and scooter riders.

It’s also time to get stated a few minutes earlier when heading to work,  since traffic will be more congested, especially Read more

(8/30/2010, Los Alamitos)  For the past  week the Register‘s Sports Section has been counting down the County’s 25 top varsity football teams.

Today #s 3 & 4 were revealed, with perennial powerhouse Mater Dei coming in at # 4, just behind our own perennial football powerhouse, the Los Alamitos Griffins!

According to the Register, Los Al Coach John Barnes thinks this could be his Read more

(8/30/2010, Los Alamitos) Looks like we may have a new “Truth Detector” in Los Alamitos!

Earlier today I came across a very interesting site called LosAlTruth.com.

Somebody’s gone to an awful lot of effort to correct some of the misinformation in that expensive flyer that landed in mailboxes throughout Los Alamitos two days ago.

They have separate posts on:

  • LATA/CPLA
  • Trash
  • CVS
  • Taxes
  • Flyer Facts

I haven’t read every post in detail, but what I scanned through seemed pretty accurate.

(8/29/2010, Los Alamitos) Our “Sunday Sermons” are a chance to focus on things more important than politics.  To be honest, I think I write them more for myself than for others.  They tend to be religious or spiritual in nature, usually from a Judeo-Christian perspective, sometimes more Christian than Judeo.

If that’s a problem for you,  you’re free to skip to another post.

Donald Bren is rich, very rich.  Something like 12 billion dollars.  Yeah, billion–a thousand millions.  Won’t live long enough to count it all, even if he counted by thousands!  Quite a philanthropist, too.

But as the saga of his Read more

(8/28/2010, Los Alamitos)  Wow–I just got done putting up a touching tribute to the late Dennis Pollman, went through our mail, and discovered the first political mailer for the November election wasn’t from Meg Whitman or Jerry Brown but from Chuck Sylvia!

I’m assuming you got the same 4-page glossy full color mailer I did from the “Los Alamitos Taxpayers Association.”

I’m very curious what your thoughts on it are.  As always, please Read more

(8/28/2010) It’s interesting how many people contact me through the “contact us” link in the masthead at the top of each page of this blog.  I few weeks ago I heard from Pat Cavanaugh, who many of us remember fondly from his years as Publisher of the News Enterprise.

Pat and Molly are doing well in Covington, Georgia, where he publishes the Rockdale News and serves as the Read more

(Los Alamitos, 8/27/2010, by Dave Emerson)  This last weekend before Labor Day there’s no shortage of free local activities, including an Elvis Presley tribute on the Green,  Pixar/Disney’s “Up,” and a Jazz concert Sunday afternoon:

  • 6 p.m. Sat, 8/28:  Cypress’ final “Concert on the Green” for this summer, free, an  Elvis Tribute, Cypress Civic Center Green (5275 Orange Ave @ Grindlay St.)  “Families, picnics, and lawn chairs encouraged,” no alcohol.
  • 7 p.m. Sat., 8/28:  Los Alamitos’ final “Music & Movies in the Park” @ Laurel Park (Katella & Bloomfield).  Free kids’ activities, music & entertainment begin at 7, popcorn & drinks & hot dogs available for “minimal cost,” free balloons to the first 200 people, movie starts at dark.
  • College Park North residents also have a Sunday afternoon neighborhood meeting, I’m told.  Details are in a flyer that was passed out this week.
  • 4 p.m. Sunday, 8/29:  Benefit Jazz Concert @ Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church with a jazz band featuring pianist, vocalist, & songwriter Peggy Duquesnel and guitarist and vocalist Dean Grech.  Suggested $10 donation benefits Rising Tide, a downtown Long Beach after school kids program, as well as Good Shepherd’s Friends of Music fund.  Click here for a 2 minute video about this event.
  • Rossmoor Highlands residents can also look forward to their meeting at 6:30 Tuesday, 8/31, at City Hall with Police Department staff to discuss last weekend’s rash of burglaries and other concerns.
  • On Wednesday, 9/1, school starts for all Los Al schools, so be prepared for more traffic & keep your eyes open for young pedestrians and cyclists.
  • After that Labor Day Weekend is just a few days away, pushing  our next City Council meeting back a day to Tuesday, September 7.

There’s doubtless more going on around our little town this weekend, & if you are aware of an event coming this weekend or next (Labor Day Weekend), please use the comment box below to Read more

Once again “Highlands Guy” has come up with an interesting question that awaits your thoughts and comments.

So far these posts have generated some good discussion, and have helped take our minds off politics to things that might unite us, so I’m going to try to get one of these “Curious Minds want to know” posts up every Thursday.  If you’ve got a question or thought to submit, use the “contact us” button in the middle of the masthead.

Today’s question:

Help wanted.

Last night my teenage son asked me if there was anything he and his friends could do at little or no cost in Los Alamitos. I think  they just wanted Read more

(8/25, 2010)  During the last election we put up a post every Wednesday to comment on local news & letters to the editor in the only local weekly that serves all of Los Alamitos, our own News Enterprise.

This year we’re adding the Sun to the mix, even though it only distributes in Los Alamitos to Rossmoor Highlands, plus bulk drops at some local businesses like Hoff’s & The N-E.

Basically, this allows discussion to proceed in a more timely fashion.  It also allows you to report on articles of interest to others in the community who may not receive or have time to scrutinize either of the paper.  Rather than waiting a week to respond, conversations can take place at the speed of light.

This week’s N-E includes a letter titled “Council hasn’t changed much” from Chuck Sylvia, and one titled “Thanks to the N-E”  from some guy named Read more

(8/25/2010, by Dave Emerson) (Blogging may be my hobby, but real estate is my job and has been for 30 years–when I obtained my license at the age of 9 ;) .  Today I’ll  straighten out some misconceptions about July’s  drop in home sales, and discus what’s going on right here in Los Alamitos real estate, and what ‘s probably ahead.)

Last night I found myself shouting at the TV,  and this time it wasn’t at Angels “hitters” or “relief” pitchers, but at Diane Sawyer, as she reported on  home sales 27% drop from June to July, “despite all the government’s efforts at stimulus.”

Arrrgggg!!  Just keyboarding her words makes me seethe!

DIANE, JULY’S PRECIPITOUS DROP WAS BECAUSE OF the government’s stimulus efforts!!  And, BTW, sweetheart, the “drop in sales” you’re reporting didn’t actually happen in July, but in April.  And in Los Alamitos I don’t believe it Read more

This meeting is to discuss the recent burglaries in the Highlands (click here for details on the burglaries) and other residents’ concerns, such as coyotes.

We’ll put up a post so Highlands residents who attend can post what they learn for the benefit of  the rest of  us.
