Reservoirs throughout California are running low

Lake Oroville, February 2008. Reservoirs throughout California are running too low too often.

(Los Alamitos, 9/21/2009) Tonight’s  Los Alamitos’ City Council will use two meetings to cover a wide variety of topics. (Agenda below)

At 6:30 p.m. the Council meets in Special Session to Read more

Police nationwide use staged accidents like this to send students a message about drunk driving. Well see what message our City Council sends on 9/21

Police nationwide use staged accidents like this to send students a message about drunk driving. Looks like our Planning Commission had a different messge to send.

(9/14/09, Los Alamitos, by Dave Emerson)  Last night the Los Alamitos Planning Commission voted 5-0 to allow the sale of  beer and wine for “carry out” use at the Shell station at the corner of Los Al Blvd. and Katella, roughly a half mile from Los Alamitos High School and 605 freeway onramps and just around the corner from both our Middle Schools and several elementary schools.

In an action one observer described as “bizarre” Read more

(9/14/09, by Dave Emerson) Los Alamitos city staff is apparently recommending approval of the request for a license to sell beer and wine for off-site consumption by the Shell gas station on Katella at Los Alamitos Bl. I’m not so sure they got that right.

Initially, I was conflicted on this one, but the more I thought about it the clearer the choices became and the stronger my Read more

(9/14/09, Los Alamitos)  If it’s the second Monday of the month, it’s time for the Los Alamitos

Planning Commission’s monthly Regular Meeting at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers.

Since the Commission did not have a quorum for their regular August meeting, and since at least one item was deferred from the July meeting, the agenda is fairly full.  (Contrary to Council Member Poe’s statement at last week’s City Council meeting, Read more

(9/12/09, Los Alamitos) Even though her editors had her covering the Huntington Beach Council meeting last Tuesday night, Jaime Lynn Fletcher, the Register’s Los Alamitos reporter still managed to get an 800+ word online article on our Council’s  recent actions  by Friday.  A shortened version appeared on Local page 12 in today’s (Saturday)  Register.

Fletcher had good quotes from both sides of the dispute.  Her subtitle seems to present a fairly accurate summary of the dispute: Read more

One more reason why "Cape Canaveral" should have been in California

(9/13/09 evening correction:) One thing I do like about this blog is that we have some informed people who aren’t afraid to correct yours truly when necessary!  Thanks to comments below by J.M. & kv, I stand corrected.  Turns out, according to them, at least, our major space port’s location in Florida had nothing to do with pork or politics.

But I still think the shuttle, at least, should be based in California.

(9/11/09, Los Alamitos)  If you were outside a little before 6:00 this evening, you heard two distinct sonic booms separated by just a second or two.

That was the sound of the Space Shuttle flying over Southern California before landing at California’s Vandenberg Air Force Base,  northwest of Lompoc.

Once again, Florida’s challenging weather is costing taxpayers money.  At least this time it didn’t cost astronauts’ Read more

New York 8 years ago today

(9/11/09, Los Alamitos)  Early this morning I was riding my zero-emissions, infinite gas mileage alternative vehicle home from “Norm’s” Automotive on Sausalito (we’ve got at least three good auto repair shops right here in Los Alamitos, so I see no need to drive further and spend more money so the sales tax on those overpriced parts can go to Cerritos or Westminster).

As I passed the Los Al fire station, I noticed John Underwood setting up a video camera to record a tribute to the heroes who gave their lives trying to save their fellow Americans eight years ago.  Men and women willing to rush into two buildings that thousands Read more

Tuesday night’s Los Alamitos City  Council Session went on for almost 4 hours, touching on many different items.

On the bright side, the Council is moving ahead, although rather slowly, on establishing a process for possibly moving forward with a General Plan review and/or revision.

The action I found most disappointing in last night’s meeting, however was Read more

(9/4/09, Los Alamitos) Several potentially interesting items are included on a rather lengthy agenda for the Los Alamitos City Council’s September 8th Regular Meeting, which was pushed back to 7 p.m. Tuesday by the Labor Day Holiday.

I hope to post details on the General Plan discussion over the weekend.  The complete agenda is Read more

(9/3/09)  The Orange County District Attorney today filed charges of grand theft and money laundering against Los Alamitos C.P.A. Patrick David Dugan.

Dugan, who served as Treasurer of the Los Alamitos Rotary Club for ten years until discrepancies were discovered in May, 2008 by Club President and City Council Member Dean Grose.

According to the D.A.’s Press Release, Dugan is accused of stealing Read more

(9/3/2009, Los Alamitos, by Dave Emerson)  After three years of service as the Community Relations Specialist at the Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Base, Heather J. Hagan today announced that, “effective immediately, due to increased responsibilities in my schedule, I will be resigning from my position on the [Regional Military Affairs] Committee.”

The news came in an e-mail sent at noon today, Thursday, under the heading, “RMAC COMMUNITY RELATIONS CHAIR RESIGNATION EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY.”

At first I thought perhaps the always helpful Heather was merely stepping down from a voluntary RMAC position, but according to Read more
