The Los Alamitos City Council will hold a Special Meeting this Monday, 7/20/2009, at 4:30 p.m. to interview and possibly appoint up to 3 Commissioners to fill 4 vacancies on the Planning Commission and up to 4 to fill 4 vacancies on the Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Commission.

Here’s the details:

Parks, Recreation & Cultural Arts Commission:

4 Openings – 2 Scheduled (Doerrer & Carvajal) and 2 Unscheduled (Destra & Johnson – resignations)

Applications received: 3 –Pete Carvajal (incumbent), Eileen Doerrer (incumbent), and Tommy Ferro

Planning Commission:

4 Scheduled Openings (Shloss, Daniel, Sofelkanik & Harty)

Applications received: 6 – Will Daniel (incumbent), John Riley, Dean Hill, Ben Sutherlin, Samuel Manning, Victor Sofelkanik (incumbent)

Two notes:

1.  It’s unfortunate that there are fewer applicants for the Parks etc. Commission than there are openings.  Good to see two of the incumbents are willing to serve again, but there must be other capable people out there willing to help on this vital comission.

2.  It’s unfortunate that the current Planning Commission Chair, Jody Schloss, did not reapply.  Although I don’t alway agree with Jody, she is always  been well informed when I’ve asked her for information, and she stays involved.  It was Jody, by the way, who first alerted the Council five years ago to the Base’s plan to accept Los Angeles Sherriff’s helicopters.   She will be missed, but hopefully she will continue her involvement in the community.

Your comments, as always, are welcome.  Please try to be constructive, and not overly critical of those who have volunteered to serve our community.
